" I refuse to pay for iCloud and unfortunately was not consistent with backups." That $3/month has been a Godsend to me on two emergency occasions, and with two new phones since then. This is going back a few years, but my iPhone X ended up under my commercial lawn mower. Blue tooth was still playing in my headphones, but what was left didn't look much like an iPhone X. Apple had a replacement phone to me in a day for $99, and it restored identical to the destroyed one. Then just two months later something similar happened, with the X getting bent in two by an electric ride on - lol. Again, two days later an identical phone. Since then, the iPhone 12 and then 14 restored identical to the previous one. So, for a klutz like me, the $3 monthly iCloud storage is a necessity. If it was any more than $3, I would have to think about it. I have learned my lesson since the X phone. Like someone previously said, take it to a mall and pay the $100 to have a new screen installed on it. The quality of the screen does not matter as long as you can unlock the phone and get your pictures off of it. For me it has always been a pain in the arse to get pictures off an iPhone. They XFER to the cloud very quickly and every now and then, I do a dump from the cloud to local storage. -----Original Message----- From: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vcfed.org> On Behalf Of David Gesswein via vcf-midatlantic Sent: Monday, July 1, 2024 7:27 AM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: David Gesswein <djg@pdp8online.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] [OT] Very OT…desperately seeking data On Mon, Jul 01, 2024 at 06:59:32AM +0000, laurakid via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

The subject of asking for help with data recovery has resurfaced because I have a smashed iPhone (long story) with port and buttons still working but screen useless, It is frustrating me that Apple is saying there is absolutely no way to get data off of this device. I know the password, I just can’t type it in. I refuse to pay for iCloud and unfortunately was not consistent with backups. I had an anroid with broken screen so nothing was visible but touchscreen was still working. I took a photo of same model keyboard and taped it to the broken screen so I knew where the key were. With a couple tries was able to type the password in and recover the stuff since the last backup.
