FWIW, the 22-bit conversion is actually VERY easy, moreso if it's a wire-wrap backplane. I'd be glad to send you photos of mine to confirm what needs to be done (it's a bit more annoying if it's serpentine, like mine, but only just).
What bus does the VAX 3300 have?
