This sounds like an inventory control unit. During this time period a lot of companies were making small handheld scanners that could scan inventory barcodes in a warehouse. I'll see if I can find the original ones, but if I recall correctly the one that was most popular was made by a company called Zon, and weree very expensive, but were very capable. It got sent back at the end of the month reluctantly, mostly because at the time I didn't have a laptop who could communicate with it,via the PC Card slot it used. And of course the thing was expensive, then, for 1992 or so dollars.
Naturally I'm still trying to find the things, and possibly the programming tools. Has anything like that shown up on the list of things for sale for the Swap meet?
