IMO, it's not worthwhile to try and reproduce the Lego control box at this point. They're readily available online
I only see one on eBay right now. It's $79.99 OBO. There are four on Bricklink ranging from $69.95-$105.39.
even if you did copy the circuit board, you're still left with the enclosure and the proprietary 4.5V connectors.
I think tinkerers wouldn't care about the enclosures. Proprietary connectors? Please explain.
