sniff...sniff...oh look, the magic smoke is pouring out of my TRS-80 8MB hard drive! :-(
The culprit turned out to be a RIFA X-class capacitor in the Astec power supply: http://q7.neurotica.com/0709162317.jpg This is exactly the same cap the blew in my Xerox 820-II. Fortunately, I had ordered spares when I fixed the Xerox, and replaced the X and Y-class caps: http://q7.neurotica.com/0709162345.jpg Time to order a new batch from Digikey. Here's a picture of the inside of the 8MB unit: http://q7.neurotica.com/0709162253.jpg The drive shows "ready" (green light). I need to find the diskette with the INIT program to see if I can access the drive. Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/
