Did you try moving by hand with power off? Normally they will move with only some resistance when power is off. If not it may be dried oil like others said.
Be very careful when doing this, and if you must do it, only move it very slowly. Like any motor, the stepper motor that moves the head carriage will generate voltage when it's turned by hand. This often fries stepper motor drivers. Slower motion generates less voltage and is safer.
