I found that even among historians the history of technology is considered uninteresting and unimportant. It's very esoteric, few people know nor care. I find that technological history comes up in the context of something else. One thing that has always annoyed me is that I always hear people talk about how art and music changed or influenced history and when I mention technologies that have had more of an impact they don't see the importance. Other than the phone, car, internet or TV. No one seems to think tech history is important or impacting.
