Many of these are sold as 3.6 volt (three cells). Maybe he can chop up a couple. Local sources? Maybe Walmart or Best Buy, as some kind of "wired telephone battery". Radio Shack used to exist and sell these for $18. Ebay has bunches but I'm not sure how batteries ship from China these days. Jameco has them on back-order.
