I see a lot that look like this one in folks' YouTube repair videos and on Twitter, I guess they're popular for protecting work surfaces! We use Alvin self-healing cutting mats on our workbenches, they won't discolor/burn from solder drips, but they're not resistant to direct soldering iron strikes.
