On an ODS-2 volume? {*} I think not! An asterisk is the wildcard character in any VMS file specification, so I'd highly doubt that you have a directory with an asterisk in it!
{*} I'm assuming ODS-2 because you said you're running V5.2.
These were bolded my me for emphasis. Your email software converted to * characters. If you seen an asterisk around something, assume this is your email program converting for you. you must have a text email.
