What Jeff said... Pascal is considered to be a "perfect" language due to it's clean structure and adherence to best programming practices. It has an inherent ability to be quickly understood by beginners due to its easy to read syntax, yet powerful enough for production use for those who have mastered it and choose to work with it. Yes, you can still use Pascal today. It's making inroads on the Raspberry Pi hardware environment. I would recommend Pascal because it was a common language to learn after BASIC, was a structured language and is relatively easy compared to other languages of the time period. You can also find many versions of it for many microcomputers.
