I'm referring to a new one we got since then. It booted and displayed an error message (didn't record it ... Doh!) so that is promising that at least its screen works. :) On Fri, Apr 27, 2018, 8:55 PM Ian Primus via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:
Yes, 1.2mb floppy. Had you asked earlier this would have been no problem for me to bring, but I won't have a chance to get it before this weekend.
The settings won't stay anyway, because the battery is flat in the NVRAM module that keeps them. Fixing this isn't that big a deal, but, again, I'm not going to have access to my stock of parts between now and the time I'm there this weekend. I might be able to cobble something together with parts that we have there, however. Also, the Portable III the museum had that I tested most recently had a hosed up screen.

1.2mb floppy I assume?
I believe so, but someone should answer who knows more than me about such things.

For anyone going to the workshop this weekend: I may need a diagnostics/setup disk for the Compaq Portable III. Can someone find that image and bring it on 5.25 floppy?
Also, TIL: Portable III and Portable 386 are different machines. Got myself confused by the naming. The one I need to get working this weekend is the III because it has the "backpack" for add-on cards.
