Galaga Challenge at Festivus
I challenge anyone to a three game battle on Galaga. We each play three games and add up the scores. Highest score wins. I'm awesome at this game. I can beat anyone! Who accepts?

I'm in. I'd prefer the nes or similar console version (I'll kick your ass on NES!! :-p But it's all good! Tony
Here is the link to the game tournament program I wrote for the C64. We used to use this back when I had employees and a full-sized MAME arcade system. I have not used in a while but the idea is that everyone picks a different game. This way everyone gets their best game in the mix. The contestants play each-others best games, and a judge manages the scoreboard, and has to witness the contestants' scores before entering into the scoreboard. The program calculates the standings. Oh, and this disk image also has the Evan Eliza variation. http://vintagecomputer.net/commodore/64/evan1.d64 As far as what game to play, I prefer the original / best version of whatever it is but it does not matter to me. Creative variations of games on various systems bring out the worst and the best in the different platforms, and/or the coders who ported them. I too prefer the original. But unless we all agree to go to yestercades and play the standup arcade machine, or if my wife would let me get that one in NY that's galaga and ms PAC man, (there are actually a couple floating around for $1500-$2500) I'll play whatever version we have handy! :-) Tony

I actually have a Galaga machine at home :-) Picked it up years ago, recently rebuilt the bottom of the cabinet as it got wet and deteriorated. I wouldn't be surprised if the Silverball Museum at Asbury Park has a Galaga on the floor. I go there with friends every time I go to VCF East. Recommended for all, there is a flat rate for all day and hourly. No coin drop. Although next year I have to visit another arcade, Eight on the Break in Jersey. The one thing about the original Galaga is the boardset wasn't made very well. The PCB material is thin, and it tends to warp badly over time. There are SIP resistor packs that are known to fail, and a ribbon cable that connects the video board to the cpu board that also has issues. A number of the chips on the board are custom to thwart reproduction, but there was a reproduction (pirated version) known as the Gallag board that used a 4th Z80 to emulate custom chips. - Ethan O'Toole
Not sure if silverball has one but I know yestercades does! Similar setup with price/admittance at yestercades. One of the gentleman that services/refurbs the pinball machines for both places works out of the same self storage place I have my units for my computers and video consoles. His son works at yestercades (or did last I spoke with them) he's got one whole row of storage units he works out of. If you ever get tired of that Galaga machine let me know! I bought a Dream Authentics arcade cabinet with various button configurations and a nice arcade display CRT, years ago for my work. Best investment .... thousands of games on it, a great way to kill 20 minutes or if I need a break from programming at home. That's pretty much the only gaming I do actually. Quick 10 minute random games and then back to whatever I was doing. If it was easy to transport I'd bring it to Festivus. b On Thu, Nov 9, 2017 at 11:29 AM, Tony Bogan via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Nice! Being bit of a purist my thing has always been taking broken machines and fixing them. But they're big. And heavy. I think the Chinese clone candy cabinets (a flat panel / sit down cabinet) will take over much of the arcade market now, outside of the music games. MAME plus the newer games that are PC based will find their way onto them. My latest (and last? wait I keep saying that) acquisition that should arrive by container in Dec is a Japanese music rhythm game called Jubeat: https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/1/10/Ubeat_irvine_locat... I'm a sucker for the sexy design more than the game play I think. Pinball is still my main thing. So heavy.
Bringing the real full sized arcade machine is too much trouble for one day. And going to Yestercades for Festivus just doesn't flow right. But ... we have gone to the Silverball museum during a workshop event and they *do* have Galaga there. So whoever goes to the next Workshop we can talk about doing this. I'll definitely bring it, but honestly I'll play any version, it's all good! I was just talking shit because that's the one my son and I play the most often. I'm not that good but it's always been one of my favorite games on any platform. I will eventually get that standup arcade cabinet too! Tony

Tony, are you bringing a Retron5 with NES Galaga? I don't have Galaga but I do have a Retron5. Also I plan to stay only through Late Sat night. I'd leave with my Retron5 then. Jeff B..you know the Retron5 plays NES games, right? I.e. it's an NES emulator. Bill

Bringing an NES (Ian always brings so much but didn't want to assume an NES) and the NES advantage joystick I sent the pic of previously, and of course Galaga. I'm so close and my stuff is all accessible anyway so I figured it doesn't hurt to bring it regardless of what we end up using. I do not have a retron5, but I am familiar with it. Tony

I honestly don't know what a JAXX joystick is, but it does not matter because I am pretty much unbeatable at any video game. Yes! Loser has to clean the warehouse! ;) And don't worry Dean, you have plenty of time to practice for the tournament. It took me a whole 3 weeks to get from 191,000 to 213,000. :-D I do have my off games, so that is why I suggest combining the score from 3 games. Also you get to see how awesome that I play and steal strategies from watching me play ;) On Tue, Nov 14, 2017 at 3:19 PM, Drew Notarnicola via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

It took me about 40 years to get to 204k, and I've never beat it since (got it about a year ago) Granted, I don't get much time to play, but I think I'll find a way to sabotage the other players to avoid cleaning the warehouse. ;-) Tony

Is the ROM that you guys got 200 000+ the same as the regular arcade ROM? There are differences. If you can advise which one to become familiar with that would be useful, I have repaired my MAME cabinet so I can refresh my memory of Galaga. OK. I'm going to make the competition simple. 3 games, total up the 3 scores, highest total wins. If you die on the first screen you are allowed one restart. Practice games are allowed, but competition games must be declared before starting. Games start when we get everyone there. We can decide anything else when we meet. Who wants to be judge? Evan?
What is there to judge if it's score-vs.-score? BTW I stink at Galaga. Space Invaders is one thing :) but Galaga has too much stuff to distract me (and it doesn't take much). Might play a practice round just for fun and see how I do. My favorite videogames (on Atari 2600) are The Empire Strikes Back and original Breakout. Also loved Indy 500 but could only play it at other people's houses because I didn't have it.
Evan, You just have to witness the score and take a picture with your phone or write it down on my sheet. We just want someone not involved to witness the score. I'm definitely willing to do another competition separate from this one for all those willing. I would be willing to compete with pac-man, ms. pac-man, space invaders or breakout. Count me in for an Atari 2600 Breakout tournament. Of course that game is
symbolic -- Woz himself coded the original. It is physically/mathematically impossible to get a higher score than I at 2600 space invaders in a 20 minute period. Bill Bill Degnan twitter: billdeg vintagecomputer.net

Haven't picked up a joystick. I don't have the system you're using, so practicing on a different controller isn't going to help much. Cheating will definitely be involved !! :p Tony
