OT: Will be in Philly, anything I should check out
Hi. This week I'm going to Philly to prep for the Democratic National Convention. I know there are some locals on this group and I'm asking if there is anything I should check out in the ways of finding food to some cool places to go. I figure Mon-Fri I will be nuts, Sat/Sun I should have some time. Any advice is appreciated.

I live here in SW Center City. I'll send you a private message later about places to eat; there are some interesting tourist things, too, but the bell is broken. - Dave

Check out Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell in Old City (pretty sure they are off 8th Street exit of Vine Street Expressway I676). Great piece of history. Also, they do tours of City Hall (Broad and Market Streets). If you do that, make sure you go up the tower, you can stand on an observation area just below the statue of William Penn. It used to be the tallest building in the city, but even now it is a great view. Can't think of any specifics, but all Philly food is awesome. See if you can stop by Reading Terminal near City Hall (not a terminal, a really cool building full of many food vendors). If you are so inclined, a bit west of the city is the King of Prussia mall which is the largest mall east of the Mississippi (I think). If you like cool architecture and classical music, the Kimmel Center is on Broad and Spruce. It has a large glass arch roof, and inside that is the music hall which has a lot of interesting features (check out their website). There is probably a lot more to see but I haven't spent as much time in the city as I would like so that is all I can think of. Tech-wise, wander over to the bottom floor of the U. Penn Moore School of Engineering and see their ENIAC exhibit.

Bare in mind there will be tons of traffic; pick places that you can get to from a subway station Going to the Liberty Bell would be pointless, anything near 2nd street, Oldtown, Market, Chinatown, and anyplace that you need to take rte 76 to get to will be jammed. Not all Septa trains are operational due to a safety recall. Plot your course using the subway, pick places you can get to from a subway. -- @ BillDeg: Web: vintagecomputer.net Twitter: @billdeg <https://twitter.com/billdeg> Youtube: @billdeg <https://www.youtube.com/user/billdeg> Unauthorized Bio <http://www.vintagecomputer.net/readme.cfm>

Ben Franklin science museum? Or is it too children oriented?
Not just for children, and very awesome, but kind of expensive these days. On Mon, Jul 18, 2016 at 11:38 AM, Ethan via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Thanks everyone. I got some good ideas. I'm on the Amtrak train right now. I don't have a car and I'm not going to get a rental. So anything away from a train is a no go. But thanks for letting me know for future events.
If you are referring to the Franklin Institute in Philly, you can get discount tickets from your local AAA office/store. My son and family went there this past weekend, and all had a very nice time. I think the discount is $6 per ticket. 73 de Ray

If you get a chance try to visit the Battleship New Jersey museum. http://www.battleshipnewjersey.org/ Take the fire control turret II tour and you can see an operational mechanical computer. There are also a lot of teletypes and paper tape devices. I think there is a AN/UYK-20 computer on display as well. Its a little pricey at $29.95 but is worth it. The tour is at 11:00 am on Saturday and Sunday. Takes an hour and a half. I hear they use that ship as part of a tour to reenact the Philadelphia Experiment. All participants are required to sign an insurance waiver in the event they don't return, or coalesce within the hull of the ship. Admission is free of charge Dan
I will be in that area too a few of those days as an Uber driver. I do know that Uber put an alert months to all their drivers in the area letting them know about the Convention. So most likely there will be lots of Uber & Lyft drivers in the Philly. They all will be out there because they know that there will be high demand. I did Uber one day a few months ago and there are generally a lot of drivers available. A lot of people use it there. I'm often in the Cherry Hill area because I visit my girlfriend there and we sometimes go into Philly. There are a few restaurants that I enjoyed, but can't recall the names. I would have to ask my girlfriend the names. One place that I remembered was Lllama Tooth. They had a good food and a good selection of craft beers. I have heard that Pumkin is a good restaurant, but haven't been there. Be aware that there has been friction between Uber drivers and licensed taxi/limo drivers in Philly. The cabbies complain that they have to pay more to the city to operate, and Uber undercuts what they have to charge. They may be demonstrations during convention week against Uber drivers. 73 de Ray

I'm very much aware of this issue. In March many cab drivers in Philadelphia said that they would refuse picking up anyone around the convention center. I feel that they wouldn't want to lose this opportunity. I'm aware that cab drivers in general are angry at Uber/Lyft drivers.
