I haven’t made it to a workshop yet. I’d like to come, but I can only make Sunday due to family commitments. Is it worth the drive for the second day, or do things wind down pretty early? I don’t have any Commodore gear (if that’s still the plan), but I’m interested in general retroborkenwerk. I’m in the process of fixing an Osborne 1 video issue and starting a deep restoration of another computer. With regard to the latter, I’m most interested in hearing the group's thoughts on preserving the integrity of an old machine while restoring it to a functional state. eric F

Yes! I can't speak for everyone here but I prefer to restore as much as possible. But as the years go by that become tougher to do. The parts aren't made anymore, they're more scarce, they're much more expensive. I think you get the point. At that point it's time to make a decision for one or the other. I'm of the opinion if there's no other way to get it working other than using new parts/technology, then do it. Of course I'm playing with my Atari 800xl and hope to drop a 65C816 and FPGA into it. I just resist hacking them (and they are so common that it's not a sin if I can restore it back without damage). :-) -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies
Hello Eric! Welcome to our group! I would say that it's fine to come on Sunday for the workshop. As long as everybody gets to bed at a decent time so that everyone isn't too much tired the next day. Everybody usually very serious at the workshop working on stuff both days Saturday and Sunday. At the very least you can have someone look at it we have a lot of good people there I would ask Ian and some others that have experience with Osborne and they can help you. This varies a lot between people. I normally replace only what needs to be replaced though there are a few parts I replace preventative such as some oil filled capacitors. Some recent fun with dipped tantalum is making me wonder about them. I try to replace components with similar looking but don't try to match date codes or brands. I will use what works if better match too difficult. I only do cosmetic restoration if its ugly. If it just looks used I normally leave it alone.
