Hi all, Back in February, I bought an ASR-33 teletype on Ebay. The seller is stalling on the shipping. Initially, I think there were some family issues, and now I suspect he's just having trouble figuring out how to get the ASR prepared for freight. I contacted him a month a go and he said he was going to see "how I can break it down to make if more flat than tall". I suspect (and hope) that he is an honest (if not super diligent) seller that has no idea how to ship this. Is there anyone on this list who might be able to give me a hand in getting this going? I imagine that some folks here may have been through something like this in the past. I could use any help at all, including guidance on the best way to ship the teletype, any suggestions for (as minimal as possible) disassembly and getting it on a pallet, etc. If there is someone in the Allentown area who might be able to help me get this shipped, I would be most grateful. Thanks in advance, Dave

For an ASR-33, your best bet is to remove the unit from its stand and ship the two parts separately. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

Yup. I have shipped maybe 10 Teletypes in my day, once you remove the chassis from the pedestal it's just a matter of packing properly. Also be sure to lock the carriage. BIG NOTE: If the pedestal has a lot of electronics in it, and they're connected to the ucc-6 (power supply), be sure to make note of what was connected to what. It may not be easy to separate the pedestal if there are a lot of connections for modem, etc. in there. Take a lot of pictures and label everything. If there is any way you can go get it yourself, In the long run it might be worth the trouble. Bill
Make absolutely sure that the printing unit is screwed down. Otherwise you will end up with a shattered plastic cover. The printing unit "floats" in normal operation. Also, have the shipper remove the H-Plate and put it in an envelope or something so that it does not get lost. Manual talks about this some. http://www.pdp8online.com/pdp8cgi/query_docs/tifftopdf.pl/pdp8docs/telet1_1.... Set page 69 and 86 of pdf.
PDF page 91 shows the H-Plate. While it will probably stay in place if the typing unit is properly screwed down, if you lose it, you will be very unhappy. It is spring loaded, so it can pop out. -----Original Message----- From: vcf-midatlantic [mailto:vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vcfed.org] On Behalf Of David Gesswein via vcf-midatlantic Sent: Thursday, May 12, 2022 4:34 PM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: David Gesswein <djg@pdp8online.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Help shipping ASR-33 from Allentown On Thu, May 12, 2022 at 04:22:11PM -0400, William Sudbrink via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

That's one of the missing pieces that has relegated my "dropped on its face" Model 33 ASR to parts unit status. I'm sure it flew off into the darkness at the recycler that I bought it from. Thanks, Jonathan
Dave, Where's it off to? I have business in the northeast that will take me through the area. Thanks, Jonathan ------- Original Message ------- On Thursday, May 12th, 2022 at 16:07, Dave via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

It's coming to Dallas TX. I will gauge the seller's level of knowledge, but his in his last message, a month ago, he said:
"I'll be going to my facility this week. I wanna, see how I can break it down to make it more flat than tall. Thanks for your patience!"
So I suspect he is not familiar with the teletype innards. Many thanks, Dave Jonathan Chapman via vcf-midatlantic wrote on 5/12/22 3:12 PM:

I have to admit that I cannot understand these sellers on eBay, they know they have to ship the item, shouldn't they have figured this out in advance? I certainly would not buy the item unless I knew how it was going to be delivered to me safely! Mike Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.
