When it comes to things like newsletters and paperwork, is it worth VCF building a pipeline to scan stuff and feed it into the internet archives? - Ethan On Fri, 28 Jan 2022, Jeffrey Brace via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

We did that over at LSSM; we have thousands of pounds of manuals in the scanning queue. I worked hard setting it all up; we have very nice high-speed production scanners and a workflow to PDF/a format all set up. But the scanners sit idle, because nobody is willing to do the work. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

Offered to do the same at InfoAge to start archiving the pallets of documents in the attic and elsewhere. No one is interested in the concept except to somehow monetize access to the material. Martin

Someone gave me 4 bankers boxes of SCUBA diving mags, in addition to a pile of Apple and TRS-80 magazines and newsletters. I used a friend's Brother machine and 3 computers. Chopped the binding, scanned it, tossed it. Sent all the magazines to Archive.org. Took a while. But stuff in a whole item, come back when it's done? Sit it next to your desk and feed it while working on other things! - Ethan

Ah, no. The scanners and the first of the pallets of documentation are at the museum, not in my lab where I actually am. And as I'm currently working about 105-110 hours per week on what's currently on my plate, so in a word, no. At some point someone else has to pitch in. And even if I were sitting here with nothing else to do, this isn't four bankers' boxes of magazines where there's an end in sight, this is several TONS of documentation, with more coming in all the time. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

Well, in that case, I wish you lived closer. We get lots of people saying they'd like to volunteer at LSSM. But they quickly learn that that means WORKING, not sitting around playing with PDP-11s, so they don't last long. Starting to get pretty sick of it. -Dave On 1/28/22 12:52 PM, Jeff Salzman via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

I had thought about investing in one of those ~$500 desktop book scanners for myself. I have collections of home computer club newsletters that I'd like to scan into structured PDF files... and maybe offer to do small batches of material from places like your museum and VCF on occasion. We've been looking at those too, both the high-end Zeutschels on the used market and some of the new Chinese ones that seem to actually be pretty good. This may or may not be a useful suggestion, but if you want to come out here and scan a bunch of stuff for LSSM, I'll make sure one of those scanners is available by then, and you can scan your stuff too. (yes, we're that desperate) -Dave On 1/28/22 1:15 PM, Jeff Salzman via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

My friend let me borrow his Brother, I think it was a 2280. Another friend here from our group gave me two Epsons, I need to repair them. Maybe I bring one to SS workshop tomorrow and replace USB port. I cut all the bindings off the magazines with a chopper. While it's fun to think of some exotic double camera setup with vacuum assisted page turners and how much the magazines were worth on the market. But at the end of the day it comes down to time. Chop the bindings, into the scanner, then post processing for the OCR for the PDFs. It did pretty well. And I was able to do other things while it was going on so I could optimize my time. Black and white screams on the Brother. The trick to this for me was doing the work at home (the probably recycling all the paper.) It's more efficient to roll by and dump 100 pages into the machine in between life tasks. Multipage diagrams and stuff are a pain and of course require different techniques (camera or blueprint scanner) but usually the bulk of stuff is normal sized. - Ethan

Yeah. That's the unfortunate part. A round trip to New Kensington and back takes up an entire working day, and I have no other connections in Pittsburgh to justify the trip. No offense to Dave. It's just that I'm inconveniently too far to be able to invest an appropriate amount of time. I'd be spending more time driving than scanning. Occasionally, once or twice a year, I am in the Pittsburgh area for work, but the next time that would be happening for me will be December 2022. I could probably arrange an extra overnight stay nearby to scan stuff Saturday afternoon and Sunday in that case. Well there's a really nice BnB owned by some friends of ours right up the street from the museum, look up "Bloser Mansion". Just sayin'. ;) -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

VCF doesn't have the space to store newsletters and paperwork beyond the special limited collection that we have now in the climate controlled museum space and a limited selection in the warehouse. We would love to support any volunteer who wants to scan newsletters and paperwork that isn't available online. If a particular volunteer wants to scan something, then we can help make that happen. Beyond that we don't have the bandwidth to coordinate something like this as an ongoing project at this time. We hope to have something like that in the future. Keep in mind that there are many others who do this all the time are are better suited and setup to do such things.

If I may pipe in from out here in the frozen midwest, let me say "YES". It is worth doing. I think small user group newsletters are as worthy of preservation as anything else, but that's just my thing. Others have different priorities and that's fine. But it's worth the effort to route certain items to those most interested in working on them. Now, feasibility is another matter. Storage isn't free. Time isn't free. And as others have pointed out, scanning things (properly!) is WORK. No matter how passionate I am about preserving nearly everything I come across, that does nothing to increase my free time or productivity. My family is tired of the banker boxes everywhere. I get it! Anyway, if there are things at risk of disposal that can't be saved any other way out East, we've got space here near Chicago for storage and, eventually, scanning. jt
