[OT] In the Bay Area...On the Wrong Day
I am in the SF Bay Area, until Thursday, for a conference, so I figured that I should check out the Computer History Museum, which I have never seen, to my shame. But then I found out that it is closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, which pretty much makes it impossible for me, as I have customer meetings all day Wednesday and Thursday. Does anyone else have suggestions of things worth doing, other than the standard Weird Stuff/Halted visits? - Alex

If you can get over to Fisherman's Wharf, check out the submarine USS Pampanito: http://www.maritime.org/pamphome.htm ...and just steps away, there's a coin-op machine museum: http://museemecaniquesf.com/ ...and of course the Ghirardelli Chocolates store. :-) Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/

Thanks, Mike! Definitely both good suggestions. I think I'll stay away from Ghirardelli , though, as I'm not much of a chocolate fan, and my wife is, so I get more than enough of that, at home! As a side note, the weather out here is just spectacular. For one used to summers in DC, this place is a literal breath of fresh air. - Alex
Worth the trip: The DNA lounge, owned by none other then JWZ, of the XScreenSaver fame. The club is a Microsoft free zone, being entirely Linux based (right down to the cash registers) https://www.dnalounge.com/ On 6/27/2016 1:34 PM, J. Alexander Jacocks via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

Yes if in San Fran, then the Trolley Museum was memorable- retro transportation & amazing design, still running the same old stuff.

Pity about the timing re CHM. It's really worth seeing. Bump the customer meeting? Now I'm not sure recommendations from an Australian count for anything, but I'd add to the list (depending on your taste): - Anchor Electronics (the only place I know that still has S-100 board kits hanging on the wall - and handwritten itemised receipts) - Winchester Historic Firearms Museum (I've not been, and I'm not into guns, but it's been recommended to me from a historical/tech perspective) - Pacific Pinball Museum - Alcatraz - If the weather conditions are favourable: Watching the afternoon fog roll in under/over the Golden Gate Bridge or during the game at AT&T Park - Visit a local vintage computer collector

That's what I would do: post on vcfed.con/forum or cctalk, ask who's around, and have a beer with like-minded folks.
