I think I was still using my VIC-20 then.
You make it sound like it was old in '81, however: Happy 40th birthday Commodore VIC-20 too. Yes, technically it was released in Japan in '80, but nobody here lived in Japan/had a VIC-1001. I've never heard a concrete, verifiable answer on what month it was released in the US.
