Everyone, This year's idea for our World (NYC) Maker Faire exhibit is replicas/workalikes. The registration opens next month, so for now this is conceptual. Me/Dean/Jeff/Corey are planning it behind-the-scenes. We will bring: - Replica 1 (Not a Mimeo, because the former is hobbyist-friendly; latter is for true aficionados) - Altair Mini - PiDP - Kim Uno - Commodore Mini - Glitchworks 8085 - Atari Flashback (maybe) Two questions: - Does anyone have Oscar's PDP-11/70, and if so are you willing to loan it to us or (better yet) exhibit it personally at the event? - What other replica hardware should we consider for this exhibit?
I have a PiDP-11/70. If I don't get approved for my own table (I was an alternate last year and admitted at the last moment), I can show mine off. On Tue, May 21, 2019, 23:24 Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Why? You're there every year just like many other makerspaces.
Maybe that's why. I've been going since 2010 and last year was the first year I was put on the alternate list until about a week before the Faire. I do know they like to have some new blood and not the same old people year after year. I can't say that my table is the most exciting thing in 3D Printing - I have a bunch of good conversations, but since I'm not local, it's not like people are going to meet me in NYC and start attending events at my place. -ethan

Yes, Gideon's board! How about Bob Applegate's KIM-1 replica? On Wed, May 22, 2019 at 12:28 PM Anthony Becker via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Good suggestions. I wouldn't mind swapping out the Kim Uno for Bob's version if possible, because we will already have one of Oscar's kits (the PiDP). However we will need to limit the exhibit due to table space. Probable focus is full replicas (not repros like the Mimeo this time around). FPGA board might not fit in. Keep the suggestions coming though! On Wed, May 22, 2019, 12:43 PM Chris Fala via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Would it be of interest to show a Heathkit replica? We've basically developed modern equivalents (and upgrades) for all of the Heathkit H8 and H89 computer boards. We've added solid state storage, USB capability, real time clock, 10 Mhz Z80, etc... I had mine on display at Alex Bodnar's booth at VCF east (the one on the left is my replica; on the right is Alex's original): https://photos.app.goo.gl/1hv9jqPEP1k2QqoS7 also see story I wrote for the Jameco newsletter a few years back... https://www.jameco.com/Jameco/workshop/MyStory/heathkit.html - Glenn

I don’t think your Heathkit is in the spirit of what we are doing. We are looking for work-alikes. Not reproductions or modern add-on boards that will work on the original and reproductions. This is why we are looking at things like the PiDP, replica-1, Kim-uno and Briel Altair. All of these replace major components or just about all components with modern micro controllers or ICs but provide the vintage software experience. I call these “work-alikes” the gateway drugs into our hobby. It’s the first step many newbies take after they download an emulator. Cheers, Corey corey cohen uǝɥoɔ ʎǝɹoɔ Sent from my iPhone

Yeah, I agree that these kits whet the appetite for the hobby. I built the Briel Mini Altair and it worked great. It a shame that all the Briel projects got abandoned except the Replica 1. I also built the MicroKIM and the PockeTerm and they all worked great. I think the Altair Clone is a great way to experience Altair operation. The Clone and Altair 8800c are available from Mike Douglas (Deramp) While the 8800c is not a kit, Mike sells the case, bare front panel & bus interface boards so you can the source the rest of the parts yourself. It looks and works just like the real thing. Regards, Jeff On Thu, May 23, 2019, 6:32 PM corey cohen via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Two machines come to mind:The uKENBAK-1 and the ELF membership card. I have the former, and I'm willing to lend that, but the latter I'm sure someone else has on hand. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson On Tuesday, May 21, 2019, 11:24:56 PM EDT, Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote: Everyone, This year's idea for our World (NYC) Maker Faire exhibit is replicas/workalikes. Just found this (by searching for it - it hasn't been publicised well) https://nysci.org/statement-on-world-maker-faire-by-margaret-honey/ "We are announcing the cancellation of World Maker Faire 2019, which had been scheduled to occur at NYSCI on September 21-22. The cancellation is due to the financial difficulties facing Maker Media, our partner in producing the event since 2010. This is a very difficult decision to make, but there is no other option at this time. While it is not possible to produce World Maker Faire at NYSCI in September, we hope it is not the end of Maker Faire. There may be other ways we can continue to bring this exceptional event to New York, but it will take time to figure out. "
