OT: Why do so many people buy game systems to re-sell over-valued?
Just looking for peoples opinions. I was looking for a Nintendo Switch for my daughter's birthday last week, couldn't find it in ANY stores, and Craigslist/Flea-Bay are all at least $100 more, some $200 more. -- Normal Person: Hey, it seems that you know a lot. It's called opportunism and profiteering. I don't agree with it, as the person doing it is not adding any value to the transaction and so is not deserving of any profit, other than being a middleman. BTW: There's a few at my local Target as of yesterday. I can try to pick one up for you if you'd like. If people were reselling them at a minor profit over retail on the online sites, that's one thing. (Like paying a 10 Premium online because the stores in a customers area and most online retailers are sold out) but tacking 33% to 66% or more, over retail prices is absurd. If companies would closely identify supply and demand, you wouldn't see this kind of price gouging and profiteering. Look at the release of the AMD Ryzen. For maybe a week or two there were some small supply issues, and people attempting price gouging on them. But was quickly addressed. Yes, I know some people want to be "early adopters" and willing to pay extra for it. But it's been out over two months, and many stores still have empty stock racks. Apparently in this particular case the supply issue is being made worse by supposed out-the-back-door sales directly by management. Not that they're stealing them, just that they're selling them at inflated prices outside the normal retail channel and pocketing the difference. I've heard that, particularly with the Switch, this is super common with Target and GameStop. Seems like this happens every time a new console is released.
