Look what showed up in my driveway: http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/HP/7935-1.jpg http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/HP/7935-2.jpg HP 7935 drive, 404MB removable pack, HP-IB interface. I need to clean it up, and replace the old foam and the first stage filter. I'm hoping the pack I have is in good shape. http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/Media/Diskpack2-1L.jpg The 7395 has a built-in microprocessor, which controls a large number of diagnostics and even acts as the display for head alignment. This is a drive that will literally walk across the floor during the random seek test, if the feet aren't screwed down all the way. Do you know how touchy the higher capacity drives like this are? I've only worked with the low capacity single platter which are pretty tolerant. Was the HP-IB fast enough to not limit drive performance?

To be fair, it took three of us to get it out of the van. :-)

This model was probably one of the last of the large capacity pack drives. As I recall from working on them in the late '80s, they were pretty solid. The media module has 7 platters: 13 data and 1 servo. According to the service manual, the drive has an automatic head alignment feature, which provides "...the capability to measure and correct for dynamic head misalignment in radial position (offset) and circumferential position (skew)."
Was the HP-IB fast enough to not limit drive performance?
Can't answer that one. I can't seem to find data transfer rates in the manuals. Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/

HP-IB interface? I would love to see this thing plugged into an HP-41C calculator :-) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HP-IL#HP-IL_to_HP-IB_interfacing
