train service to VCF-East
A European colleague of mine, wants to attend VCF-East from New York City. Their obvious question is, "what trains do I catch?" as trains are normal means for European travel. Also, frankly, the cost of car rental and tolls makes train travel a better deal for travelers. I'm aware the nearest train station is several miles from InfoAge. I don't expect VCF to provide pickup/dropoff. But this is an old question and should have a stock answer now. Please describe the nearest train station to the event, and what likely trains from NYC (optional Phila) would be reasonable to take, and a Web link to schedules. Again, I assume this is old information and not that hard to verify; and would be useful to other VCF-East attendees. I don't use the trains, so I don't know. Herb Johnson -- Herbert R. That's the train I'm taking, but I arrive on Thurs and getting picked up. The NJ Transit from NYC Penn Station to the Belmar station [closest to InfoAge, 2miles] They also have non-stop service during rush hour[am & pm] which makes it easy Their train schedule shows the itinerary options when selecting the departure time. Some will have non-stop service and some don't, during rush hour. I haven't seen a direct link to each Train on their schedule. You'll have to enter the info directly on their website, From, To, Time, Date, click on "Rail" button I use, From = "Penn Station New York", To = "Belmar" http://www.njtransit.com/hp/hp_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=HomePageTo Dan

I stumbled on another of their webpages which give a Daily Schedule version of their Trains But you still have to directly enter the info I use, origin = "New York Penn Station", destination = "Belmar" And you can see all of the trains for that day, both non-stop and others http://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainTo
Best way to determine NJ mass transit options is via Google Maps and click the little bus icon when asking it for directions.
I'd say, from NYC, "NJ Transit to Bradley Beach" followed by "Lyft" or "Uber" to get to VCF.
From Philly -- good luck. By train, you'd have to go to NYC and then take the above train south.

No William! Not all the way to NYC!
From Philly I have taken the train when I attended Drexel University in Philadelphia and took this route for years. You have to take three trains. The SEPTA - R6 from 30th street station to Trenton, then switch trains to the NJ Transit - Northeast Corridor line to Rahway. Then take the NJ Transit - North Jersey Coast Line to Belmar. The whole trip is about 3 to 3 and 1/2 hours. Maybe more depending on schedule. The problem is that there isn't good east to west trains as seen by this map: https://www.njtransit.com/sf/sf_servlet.srv?hdnPageAction=TrainSchedulesMapT....

Yeah, from Philly it's about a 90 minute drive with no tolls if you go up 295 (except the Whitman bridge on the way back into Philly). If anyone in the area wants to carpool, hit me up, I'll see what we can arrange; I'm not taking anything TOO big this year. - Dave
Thanks for actual Web links and routes and real experiences. Looks like the same trains for NYC to Bradley Beach NYC to Belmar So I believe these are equivalent. Is one stop any better than the other? Thanks for Phila route - not needed for my colleague but useful in the future. Note: http://infoage.org/wp/infoage/visitor-information/ says "taxis are available at the train station". No station is listed. herb from the 20th century -- Herbert R. Belmar is slightly closer, I missed seeing that. In theory, one could take one's bicycle on the train, and bicycle the 3 or 4 miles from the station to VCF. Yes, mouse has done this a lot before he got a car. He used to take the train from Jersey City to Belmar and rode his bike to InfoAge. On Wed, Mar 30, 2016 at 2:21 PM, William Dudley via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:
