VCF East 2024 Atari Classroom
All, Being that it’s the 45th anniversary of the release of the Atari computer and continuing the still popular 6502 theme, I will be doing an Atari classroom similar to the Apple classroom that was done two years ago. I have a quantity of Atari computers that I am reconditioning in advance of the class, but I’m anticipating that I will be needing more working units of any of the Atari 8-bit family. My ask is that if anyone has machines to sell/lend/donate for this effort, it would be greatly appreciated. As well, I welcome any teaching assistance from anyone who has experience with Atari BASIC and/or assembly language. The courses will be similar to the Apple classes with beginning and advanced BASIC/assembly and an overview of the system architecture. Thank you, Dean p.s. - Planned for next year is a CoCo classroom to give the 6809 some love, so I’ll be bugging everyone again at that time ;-)
Wil, Thank you! DOS will only get a brief treatment to show how to save/ retrieve files. I’d love to do Action! (my favorite back in the day) but I think it’d be too involved for time we have. I’ll be in touch with you over I finalize the syllabus. Any Atari 8-bit with at least 48K of RAM will do! On Thu, Dec 28, 2023 at 6:55 PM Wil <wil@birkmaier.org> wrote:
I don't know if it was my middle school specifically but we did logo, basic and action! For our intro to coding classes on Atari 800s with 810s. If could remember anything I learned beyond Atari dos, having dual drives and happy computer chips, I would be more than glad to help teach.
What hardware are you looking for?

You can always teach others how we "installed apps" back in the day like I did in my video using an Atari. https://youtu.be/HkFmZRhtQvs?si=vg_qlkqrRaOsQsJu Jeff Salzman On Thu, Dec 28, 2023, 5:43 PM Dean Notarnicola via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Jeff, Indeed! Similar to the Apple class, we’ll have example programs to type in that teach key programming concepts that are specific to the Atari. On Thu, Dec 28, 2023 at 8:39 PM Jeff Salzman <jeff.salzman@vcfed.org> wrote:

Dean, Neil - we should meet up and discuss further... I'm doing some things and I may have 10-15 Atari Fujinets available for use at VCF for the classroom.... This would greatly simplify your setup - no need for any disk drives - unless you want a couple for the feels of a disk. But with every classroom Atari FujiNet enabled (it works fine with a 1050 connected on SIO) you could really go do some cool classroom related work that would incorporate the Fujinet in BASIC. There is the classic Mastodon example in basic and a whole new set of small sample apps for testing the FN Network libs. https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-apps/tree/master/httpbin <https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-apps/tree/master/httpbin> https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-apps/tree/master/mastodon/atari <https://github.com/FujiNetWIFI/fujinet-apps/tree/master/mastodon/atari> (the basic app is on the ATR disk image) You can use the built-in BASIC of the XLs or even the new FASTBasic: https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic <https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic> https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/blob/master/manual.md#fujinet-statements <https://github.com/dmsc/fastbasic/blob/master/manual.md#fujinet-statements> (make sure you read the above if anything in this email) Fastbasic is like action, can be written and complied on modern PCs (to enable you to come up with work for the classroom very easy) or be edited and compiled on the Atari itself....and has enhanced FujiNet support built in. The classic BASIC works because FN acts like another CIO device on the Atari- it's just way more verbose to use. So yeah, there are some opportunities here to do something cool and relevant with modern Internet - which is the entire point of the FujiNet project. -andy

Martin, let me discuss with the rest of the classroom team to see what they have in mind. A separate SSID might not be a bad idea. My thinking is that the Fujinet devices may need their own IPs. I know folks probably want 'net access to access the TNFS severs on the net. But ... (that but needs a bit of discussion). Need to see what the class entails and how much depth the class will go into. Not sure they can really cover the entire Fujinet device in a single class and these classes may actually be about something else like Atari BASIC and assembly. :-) -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry kd2zrq@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies KD2ZRQ

Neil, The DHCP scope is plenty big, however we can carve out a class C for statics if need be. Another option is spinning up a TFNS server on one of the Linux boxes... Let me know - Martin
