Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Slightly OT: Prep for VCF East 2026 was: VCF East 2026 mark your calendars!
FYI to those asking about what cable to run. If permanent I would suggest CAT6a or 7 which would allow for multi uses of the runs! 10mb, 100mb, 1gb, or 10gb as well as regular POTS Analog Tip-Ring and even some PBX technologies like Nortel MICS. If temporary then run whatever you have the most of laying around! So the Usual Suspects at Camp Evans (the home of the VCF brick and mortar museum) have racked the ADIT-600 channel banks adjacent to the main exhibition space in Building 9032A.
Both are cross-connected to RJ-11 patch panels, and CMG (SIP) service cards added. At the moment, they are on the Camp Evans Backbone, however they could be isolated on their own fiber and fed from CDL (Building 9059)

I think I remember seeing that a few weeks ago, and I was wondering what that was for! I *would* do it, as I operate a number of Asterisk systems with associated equipment and this is right up my alley, but unfortunately I'm not local so I'd likely only be able to attend Saturday. If someone else is able to do any needed wiring beforehand, I'm happy to help with setting up the box remotely if needed. I have a CMG card myself but haven't done anything much with it, and using TDM is really the proper way to set up a channel bank - IMO, using SIP will offer a significantly degraded experience. Any reason T1s can't be run back to the Asterisk server, particularly if it'll be on site? That's the way we do it at LSSM for our internal dial-in pool and BBSes. That, and it's significantly more feature rich, when dealing with analog phones. There's a lot of cool stuff you can do with TDM that you just can't do with SIP. From what I understand, VCF Midwest also uses real TDM at their conference and not SIP. Neat! Unfortunately, I'd be surprised if DAHDI ran on anything besides Linux nowadays. DAHDI BSD hasn't been maintained in forever. Even on Linux, maintenance from the company has been basically nonexistent, I am doing basically all of it (and I don't work for Digium/Sangoma). The company has really gone downhill since Mark Spencer left to fly airplanes and they sold to Sangoma, they no longer have anyone on payroll that really understands the TDM stuff at all. ------------------------------ Message: 8 Date: Sat, 17 May 2025 15:26:18 +0000 From: Richard Cini <rich.cini@gmail.com> To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Subject: [vcf-midatlantic] Semi OT: looking for info on V25 SBC Message-ID: <DS7P223MB142458E6B401579F79C83941FB92A@DS7P223MB1424.NAMP223.PROD.OUTLOOK.COM> Content-Type: text/plain; charset="Windows-1252" All ? I know that there are some SBC and robotics people on-list so I thought I?d toss this question out there. I dug up an old project from the 1990?s that used a V25-based SBC from New Micros in Texas. There?s scant info available other than a 2-page spec sheet, but it seems that it ran Forth and a robotics ?monitor? from the Seattle Robotics Society. The former owner of NM passed away in 2020, so I thought I?d ask if anyone has a manual or schematics for the NMIT-0025 or NMIX-0025 boards (one version sat on a carrier board and the other was an ECB-sized board with a prototyping area). Here?s a link to the spec sheet (https://www.camelforth.com/e107_files/downloads/newmicros/product_datasheets...). If you go up the file tree, it looks like a great archive of New Micros stuff, but nothing on this board. I tried sending a message to the owner, but I get 403. So I tried to join the forum and that barfed too. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks! Resources specifically reefers to running the horizontal cables from the furnace room to the tables / exhibits that need them, and removing them after VCF East (if not permanent and code compliant) Exhibit Setup and room size I would have to defer to Jeff Brace as the show-runner, 9032A is the big exhibit room closest to Marconi Road http://compdecon.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/infoage_building_number.jpg has them identified ------------------------------ Message: 11 Date: Sat, 17 May 2025 12:43:27 -0400 From: "Martin A.

Anyone interested in provisioning an Asterisk box locally to provide analog dial tone during VCF East 2026?? No takers or interest???
Naveen,
CDL has an HP G4 workstation and Digium 5TE420 T1 card that we offered to rack in the 9032A furnace room (and will do so once we iron out the UPS issue) - what we do not have the resources to run the horizontal cables to the exhibit location? in 9032A. VCF would need to address that as show set-up.
Which location is 9032A on the map? I can't remember where that is off hand. By resources, is the main constraint the cable itself or something else? How many tables need to be wired up and what's the size of the room?
https://vcfed.org/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/VCFE_2024_Location-Map.pdf
Resources specifically refer to running the horizontal cables from the furnace room to the tables / exhibits that need them, and removing them after VCF East (if not permanent and code compliant)
Exhibit Setup and room size I would have to defer to Jeff Brace as the show-runner,
9032A is the big exhibit room closest to Marconi Road
http://compdecon.org/wp-content/uploads/2025/05/infoage_building_number.jpg has them identified
If it turn out only one or two exhibitors need phone lines, I have a box of CISCO ATA191-3PW-K9 ATA that CDL set up for PoE, would be running network cable instead of analog voice to the exhibits.? With that said, would prefer to have an permanent asterisk switch on site. That's the way we do it at LSSM for our internal dial-in pool and BBSes. TDM is so much simpler and free of hassle compared to SIP.
That, and it's significantly more feature rich, when dealing with analog phones. There's a lot of cool stuff you can do with TDM that you just can't do with SIP. From what I understand, VCF Midwest also uses real TDM at their conference and not SIP.
Yep. I was going to stop short of saying "SIP is a steaming pile", but I'll go ahead and say it: "SIP is a steaming pile".
(I'm also a bit biased, I'm the primarily developer of TDM related stuff in Asterisk nowadays.)
Oh, very cool. I did some work for Digium (Solaris drivers for some PCI cards) about twenty years ago. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA ------------------------------ Message: 13 Date: Sat, 17 May 2025 14:44:49 -0400 From: "Martin A. Michael, TDM (Time Division Multiplexing) Time Division Multiplexing (TDM) is a legacy method of transmitting multiple signals over a single communication channel by dividing the channel into distinct time slots, making best use of the empty spaces between other signals.? In this case, a method to squeeze 23/24 calls onto two pairs of wire (T1) CMG (Customer Media Gateway) service card provides IP services like TDM-to-IP voice conversion and routing n the ADIT600 series equipment SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) is a specific protocol used to manage the establishment, maintenance, and termination of VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) telephone calls. Re the IP phones:? Be aware that some are locked to a specific carrier, or cannot be used for SIP/VoIP without new firmware (looking at you Cisco!) Dave, If I can ask, what Linux are you running, what Asterisk release, and what channel bank? Since CDL / VCF is starting from scratch, it may be useful to go with a combination known to work.
<trimming for clarity> David, So far any horizontal cabling installed by the "usual suspects" at Camp Evans has been CAT6, using methods in compliance with the BICSI TDMM [1], with the exception of mechanical fiber couplers. Due to the steam lines / radiators that were abandoned in place, and the routing of conduit used for a later electrical upgrade, permanent installation of raceway or conduit supporting the proposed horizontal cabling in a code-complaint fashion would be problematic (read customer-speak for very expensive) With 47 weeks until VCF East 2026, and the understanding that 9032A is blocked out for a significant portion of November and all of December for the Holiday Train Show, the group tackling would need to define the needs and ASAP. I had the idea to, rather than a horizontal raceway around the entire room, install a handful of RJ21X Amphenol “harmonicas” on 25 pair cable dropped vertically from the attic. VCF and its exhibitors are used to providing temporary electrical cabling to centrally located outlets, the same should be doable to get hooked up to these for telephony during the shows. Martin, let me know what you think. -August Sent from my iPhone

There are actually wall plates with stubbed 25 pair cables on the side walls of 9032A that could be used as drags to pull in the new cables Link for cable cost estimate: https://www.discount-low-voltage.com/200-foot-Male-to-Open?
