Re: [vcf-midatlantic] OT: time to downsize
Just added: Besides the TRS-80 Model 1 systems, Model 4, Color Computer 2 systems, plus related software and documentation that I added the other day, I’ve also now added all the TRS-80 Model 1/3/4 books that I have. I’ve had a lot of inquiries about the Model 4 - yes, it’s still available until someone commits to coming and getting it! I think I’m going to have to put it back into storage, as I’ve now been using it for days and I don’t want to get drawn back in! ;) I think once I get all the TRS-80 stuff stowed back away I’ll go back and add the assorted items that I found in my closet in the other categories *after* I did the listings. I've been regularly marking the sold and sale pending items, thank you guys so much! And once again - many thanks to those who have adopted some of my babies so far. Please let me know if I can clarify anything or if any more photos are needed. (I had to do that recently for a relative.) On the electronics side, I've decided to concentrate on my vintage video game systems - and therefore sell off most of my vintage computer stuff. My collection includes mostly 8-bit stuff: TRS-80 Models I, IV, M100, etc. - Atari 400, 800, Portfolio, ST, etc. - C64/VIC20 - T/S1000 (including an unbuilt kit), Apple II, II+, IIe, IIe Platinum, IIgs - Wang WLTC - Mattel Aquarius - TI-99/4A - many others that I still have to dig out - plus lots of peripherals, disks, manuals, etc. Also have some newer Macs starting with a Mac Plus in an Apple carrying bag. I'm starting with you guys before trying to list elsewhere, although I may hit some of the dedicated FaceBorg pages (such as for Aquarius and Apple II.) I'm willing to ship some of the smaller items, but in general systems or monitors will need to be picked up here (near the Fort Washington exit of the PA Turnpike) or nearby, and cash or PayPal for payment. I may also consider trades for some of the video game stuff I'm looking for. It pains me to do this, but the clutter is getting out of hand, and I haven't touched most of these in years. New updates. Added a bunch of Atari ST software plus another Atari 400/800 BASIC cart - and reorganized the pages a bit. Just found two boxes of C64 software so I’ll go through that next. More stuff added! I reorganized the Apple pages and added Apple II software, a pair of Apple II DuoDisk units, plus an Apple IIgs. I was also able to test the Apple 5.25 Floppy Drive and it works great! Another update: Changes to some of the Apple items (Mac Plus 1MB actually has 2MB and is now tested!), Apple IIgs also now tested (and confirmed to have 3MB RAM - plus added mouse and floppy drive - waiting on System disks for it), added Apple 40SC hard drive, Apple 8500 (upgraded to G3), plus some newer items including a MacBook Pro. Also created an “Other Systems & Hardware” page and started populating that (mostly SCSI devices so far.) Next up I’ll go through the case of SCSI cables & terminators and list those, then on to some interesting PC items! More stuff! I added a couple of external SCSI Iomega Bernoulli drives, a couple of USB Iomega ZIP 100 drives (with lots of cartridges), and a few other things. I just got some Apple IIgs System disks in the mail today, so I’ll be able to test out the IIgs a lot better shortly (and I’ll include those with the unit) then I can store that and all the SCSI devices and start testing PC items. Just a quick update. I’m now working my way through DOS/Windows 3.5” floppies, mainly to make sure there’s no personal info on them. I thought I was almost done then found an entire case of Mac software. <sigh> In any case, I’ll keep slogging through, but I think I’m reaching the point where I am going to start listing elsewhere soon. If you were on the fence about something and it’s still available, please get back to me! Stuff is slowly being claimed but there’s still plenty left. On another note, I did now acquire an iMac G3/233 (thanks Bobby!) so I took that off the trade list. The case is cracked but otherwise it works well. It’s missing the I/O door and the mezzanine slot cover however. I hope everyone had a happy and healthy Thanksgiving! :) I marked a few more sold items and added a few more new items - notably a bunch of 3.5” floppies on the “Other Media” page. I’m getting down to the end now. Most of the remainder will be parts and miscellaneous items, but I never know what I’ll uncover! I added a ton of blank and used floppies today, plus a few other items. And I think that plastic “Head Vibration Protector” may be from Atari SF354 or SF314, but still looking for confirmation! It’s hard to believe I’m still digging through cases! Thanks for looking. - Bob Shuster ---- I've been regularly marking the sold and sale pending items, thank you guys so much! Probably the last update for 2022: I added more categories to the “Other Systems & Hardware” page, specifically I broke it down into Systems, SCSI, ATA/IDE, SATA, & OTHER, then added a bunch of IDE/ATA (PATA) and SATA drives and devices. First update for 2023: added a few things throughout and marked some more sold items (thank you!) Notably added an empty PC case on Vintage Other/Other and a rolling laptop travel case on Ephemera. Another quick update! I finished adding assorted items to the "Other Systems & Hardware" page in the “Other" section and marked some more sold items (thank you!) and started a new "DIMMs & DIPs" page, which I’ve begun to populate (just some 40-pin DIPs at the moment - many more to come.) I started sorting and photographing my huge assortment of DIP chips, but it got to be too much so I have them up as a single lot. Close to 400 chips - asking $200.
It's time for someone else to enjoy.

Mike may not have meant to send this to the group, but it brings up an interesting issue. To clean or not to clean vintage computer items. Mike had an issue with a computer I sold him that someone had apparently used GooGone on, and he thought it was just dirty from the photos. I guess I could have been clearer in the description. That being said, what are the thoughts on cleaning vs. not cleaning vintage machines? My thought is that I want to keep original finishes intact as much as possible, and if I’m selling something even more so as I am certainly not a restoration expert. I do clean basic dust and dirt, but leave more difficult cleaning alone (such as adhesive, marker, or anything that requires disassembly that could potential damage the item - like keyboard caps or Retro-briting yellowed plastic.) What’s the consensus? Obviously we don’t want to receive a computer that had rodents or insects living in it, but what would be your preference? (Note: in my defense, I try hard to very accurately describe condition on items with clear photos, and I do solicit questions, but I’m not infallible.) Bob Shuster

This is a pet peeve of mine. Leave the finish alone. Don't scrub, don't buff and definitely don't "retrobrite". I'm sure I'm in the minority. If anything a little mild soapy water is all I use. That is my intention as well. If it is my own piece of equipment that I’ve had for myself, I keep the condition as good possible. Which means, it gets cleaned before it gets sold, if necessary. Mike Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

+1 General cleaning to remove normal dirt but I don't go further. I have a beat up CoCo 1 that has been abused but still works. I added an "input devices” page with mostly keyboards and mice, plus I found a Sony internal 3.5” floppy if anyone needs one - it’s on the “other” page near the bottom. Bob, with all of the stuff that you need to get rid of, or “” downsize, why not pack up your car and come to the VCF swap meet Saturday? Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

Mike, I considered that at first, but I have screws in both shoulders, a compact SUV, and nobody that can help me. Besides, I’d end up bringing new stuff back with me and that really would defeat the purpose! - Bob

I recently acquired an iMac G3/233 Rev. A, and it is missing the IO cover and the mezzanine slot cover. I mentioned this in one of my “downsize” emails, but thought I’d bring it up separately! As I know many of you are hoarders just as bad as me - wondering if anyone has spares of these items? I’m fixing this up for a toddler so I’d like to minimize curious finger exploration if possible! Thanks - Bob
