We made the NY Times (sort of)

Thanks for the link, Adam. Could this be the start of our hobby going mainstream? "Consider this next time you think about tossing a supposedly obsolete iPhone." Unfortunately, this last sentence is ironic because old iPhones will be certainly be obsolete due to the way the tightly controlled iOS architecture operates. And this is coming from a big user of the Apple eco-system. It makes my life easy now, but will never be a useable retro system.
I think we can use the classic car hobby as an example. Classic cars are cars that were made to be repaired. Modern cars, long term, are not made to be repaired. I don't foresee iPhones becoming a vintage hobby and I don't foresee Teslas becoming a vintage hobby. No matter how many years. The right to repair movement gives me some hope, but, like it or not, as much as I hate 2021 Apple's "solder everything last blasted thing in and make it as tiny as possible philosophy" such a philosophy is clearly what consumers are willing to spend a *lot* of money on. And twitter is already railing about Retro Computers vs Vintage Computers. Yay, more religious wars! On Fri, Jan 8, 2021 at 10:52 AM Peter Cetinski <pete@pski.net> wrote:

This link has been making the rounds on social Media this morning. Mainstream press about retro computing is a good thing (some already complaining about potentially driving prices up, but that’s always something people complain about!) Seems though there is always a line in most every article/blog/etc I read (mainstream or otherwise) that shows there’s still a whole lot of educating to be done about what was and what it could do and what was done with these now retro machines. Just one from this particular article: “ The devices do allow retrocomputers to make art and music using software unavailable on new computers and to play 8-bit games, but not much else beyond that.” Tony
I am actually on a slack thread with people at work about the 1995 Pentium III error. On Fri, Jan 8, 2021 at 10:41 AM Adam Michlin via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Yea.. We had a conversation about it in slack. I jokingly said, "it's funny no one talked to me about this" I post many of our videos in one of our slack groups On Fri, Jan 8, 2021 at 2:05 PM RETRO Innovations via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

I thought the Pentium I had the error. I heard that it was supposed to be the 586, but when they did the math it only came out to 585.73784629083 On Fri, Jan 8, 2021 at 11:19 AM Christian Liendo via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

I was wrong. It was the Pentium. I was thinking of a bug in the PIII MMX instructions. The past can be murky... On Fri, Jan 8, 2021 at 8:18 PM Dean Notarnicola <dean.notarnicola@vcfed.org> wrote:

<sarcasm> You mean that monitor I have is worth $2K ... Ebay here i come </sarcasm> Has anyone really seen a $2k Monitor? This is like the other thread with the $425 booklet (???). That's another part of the article I fault. A lot of education is needed, we did a lot with computers in the 70's and 80's (and we still do ;-) ). Now we can squeeze in a lot more features (and bugs). And we (should be able to) do things faster. Alexa turn on the kitchen lights ... I think it's great. I don't think it's possible for anyone who writes about vintage computing to not include something about the Apple 1, but it was nice to see references to the newer stuff, which is what I was talking about in the article I wrote on kennettclassic.com. There is a post-vintage thing happening, at least post-vintage to what we here in this group originally intended "vintage computing" is. Bill
I bet that Quasar TV in the picture is going to be worth lots of money if somebody has one! I’m going have to tell my buddies at the Antique TV group on Facebook! Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.
