This feels like a historic moment. How many of these even exist any more? On Tue, Oct 26, 2021 at 3:40 PM Jonathan Chapman via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Who knows -- some have shown up on eBay, but as far as I know there's been no effort to catalog the extant 6501s. I can bring the OSI 400 board by sometime if the museum would like to test their 6501, perhaps do a video about it or something. I think the test of the museum's chip and the video is an excellent idea! On Tue, Oct 26, 2021 at 5:09 PM Jonathan Chapman <lists@glitchwrks.com> wrote:

Okay, that is cooler than cool! I knew the OSI-400 could support the 6501, but I never expected anyone to have a chance to try it out. I still need to build my 400 replica board some time, put it through its paces. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson
OI knew the OSI-400 could support the 6501, but I never expected anyone to have a chance to try it out.
Yeah, this was a pretty rare situation where the owner of the MOS 6501 was more interested in *trying* it even if it meant finding out that it was dead. I suspect most people with 6501s sort of don't really want to know if it's dead, as "definitely dead" probably decreases the value :P There is of course no good reason to think an OSI 400 board would blow up a 6501 (it is after all one of the only things ever designed to support it), but now we know for *sure* it won't. Thanks, Jonathan
Well. I'm willing to bring mine to test if you are ok with a 3rd 6501 On Tue, Oct 26, 2021, 7:32 PM Jonathan Chapman via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

If you come up for Festivus, then we can do it at that time. Otherwise, just let us know when you come make a trip up to the museum.

OK, I'm going to try and make Festivus as long as nothing comes up. And of course anyone else with a 6501 is welcome to test, too! Thanks, Jonathan ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ On Tuesday, October 26th, 2021 at 20:40, Jeffrey Brace <jeffrey@vcfed.org> wrote:

Did you say a 6800 also works, but you had to adapt the power, or did I misread an earlier message? Bill On Tue, Oct 26, 2021 at 9:46 PM Jonathan Chapman via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

It'll work with a 6800, you just have to change the ROM. No PSU changes required. Thanks, Jonathan ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ Original Message ‐‐‐‐‐‐‐ On Tuesday, October 26th, 2021 at 21:51, Bill Degnan <billdegnan@gmail.com> wrote:

8<----- snip-snip-snip Wow, that actually is very cool! I would have expected it to work as the 6501 was supposed to be pin compatible (except for the tristate pin). -- Linux Home Automation Neil Cherry ncherry@linuxha.com http://www.linuxha.com/ Main site http://linuxha.blogspot.com/ My HA Blog Author of: Linux Smart Homes For Dummies

This is a really cool validation that the 6501 really was a drop-in for the 6800 (an oft-retold story, but nice to see it proved). I've never seen a 6501 in person and now they are coming out of the woodwork! Much fun! -ethan
