Being serious this time. I can't really answer Evan's question about poss speakers until we have some kind of framework for the event itself. Evan talked about a team exhibit containing every Commodore computer model this year, is this still the plan? Will there be more teams/exhibit groups? If Commodore is going to be emphasized it would make sense to go heavy on the Commodore speakers and that makes Charles Brannon a good choice. Are there any historical milestones (40 years ago 1977 lots happened then, 50 years ago 1967 a bit more challenging...60....). I think once there is a loose structure you can approach speakers with a reason why they'd be important to the event's success, easier to get the speaker if you have a purpose behind his talk beyond generic we are into "old computers" and you remind us of old computers hey speak at out event! b

I talked about team exhibits for Apple, Commodore, and Tandy, all centering on the "trinity" of the 1977 anniversary. Still there is no official "theme" for the show. All kinds of computer history are welcome and we'll gladly accept any awesome speakers/exhibits we can get.
not redundant to past keynote subjects.
It would be helpful if you made a list of these keynote people/subjects. Not all of us have been to every VCF East. Do you also have a list of those that are a definite "no", whether that be because they want to come, are too far away are are dead. Otherwise if we don't know who is already on the "no" list we will continue to suggest people that are on it and get frustrated by your "nos". Why not repeat something that was done at VCF from 10 more more years ago? I have only been to VCF 8 to date, I missed all the ones before that. So I will never get to see speaks that presented from before VCF 8? There are always new people coming into our group that haven't seen, heard, or know everything. Some topics are still interesting enough to repeat every 10 years or so. Just because 5 to 10 out of 100 people have seen it all and know all of it doesn't mean that the other 90 people wouldn't be interested. Remember this event isn't for historians, but for the general public so there is still a lot we don't know or don't know is truth. For example, what I know about Woz comes from movies (which tend to be inaccurate), popular myths and legends and the book "Dealers of Lightning". Merely letting someone like that come to tell the latest thing they are working on doesn't appeal to a wide audience. How many people would you say that go to VCF East have read accurate books on what he has done? People want to hear about stories from back in the day. If there are children there (millennials and younger), then this is all new to them. I also think it wouldn't hurt to review the list of speakers from the past 10+ years for VCF East. I think any speaker from 5[or more] years ago would be welcome About the event structure, the prior structure from 'Before the Tent' years, we had several speakers, not just keynotes, in the morning, eg. VCF East 7.0 That brings some history back to the event too And then add +1hr to the end of Sat, so you should have extra time for exhibits in the afternoon Dan

that should have read ....from "Before the Tent Wars" sorry I was slow in typing that day ;) we had several speakers, not just keynotes, in the morning, eg. VCF East 7.0

Sol has already done it.
okay, that was 4yrs ago[?], before that, it was 6yrs ago, I would think he would be glad to be invited again you can add an extra column to your speaker spreadsheet number of times they hosted at VCF East, eg, SNL hosts :) and give them a memorabilia for participating He's not getting any younger
Carl is a possibility.
convince him
Unfortunately Stephen Gray is very ill and not in position to be traveling or giving speeches.
see that list there is growing constantly, one more reason to not exclude speakers from previous events new people visit VCF East every year that never saw most of these speakers It doesn't hurt to rotate some of the speakers every 5yrs or so here's some more Ray Holt [10yrs ago, but a very good story] Watts Humphrey [8yrs ago, but another very good story] James Clark - worth a try Bill Joy - also worth a try I still think the pre-Tent Wars structure/schedule, eg VCF East 7.0, is something worth considering, seeing how the H bldg is available now A couple extra speakers on Sat and/or Sun is worth it - to keep the history alive The VCFu classes on Fri is fine where it is and what happened to the records for VCF East X and XI did you delete them from vcfed.org ?? I see that VCFeX was archived on vintage.org vintage.org always kept the archives of years past - until that expired but now you have to use the wayback machine for those as a result they still have broken links, missing images, etc --- stupid if you need a hand in archiving this -- open your mouth Dan
Anyone who wants to see past speakers can visit our YouTube page. Not everything is there but a lot of it is. I am gradually building a new archive page at http://vcfed.org/wp/festivals/festival-audiovideo-archive/.

I'd rather see them in person. YouTube is when you can't see the real thing, and we have an opportunity to (possibly) see the real thing.....again for some people. I bring new people every year as I'm sure most do when possible. I had no idea MARCH/VCF (I know...) even existed before 2014. Those I have brought to or told about it also had no idea of our existence (and many of infoages existence) until I told them. I know it may seem old news to you but for the rest of us it'd be brand new! I agree that anyone that hasn't spoken in 5 years or more should be eligible to speak again. I like the idea of multiple speakers too. Just my .02 Tony
Re: multiple speakers each day. There are two reasons we stopped doing that. First reason is it's hard enough to find one good speaker, let alone two or three. Second reason is most of the people (from the whole attendance, not just the small group here on our list) want to spend their day checking out computers not listening to speeches. I would bring back certain speakers if they have something new to say. Having them simply repeat themselves is a poor use of our limited resources.

I certainly understand that mindset and appreciate it. However, it ignores the fact that has been pointed out by others that for many it is not a repeat if we never heard it in the first place. Not to mention that assumes the brief speech given initially was all those people had to say worth listening to. Something I highly doubt is true. Just some food for thought. I'm thrilled with VCF regardless and I've thoroughly enjoyed the three I have been to so far!!! Tony

Seconded. I would be very happy to see Bill Joy in person, for example. Hard to shake hands with a YouTube video. It's the guy who brought us socket(), for heaven's sake. - Dave

Sam was one of the ASCII overstrike art pioneers. His name is on several of the large prints, such as Buzz Aldrin on the moon, and Spock holding the Enterprise. He was at Princeton in 1973. See my ASCII Art page for details: http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/ASCII/ The last time I corresponded with him (2009), he was in Pittsburgh.
