I have a few Bernoulli (90MB) or SyQuest (44/88MB) 5-something-inch removable cartridge SCSI (external) disk drives. While they look similar, I doubt they are cross compatible - comments? There's a recent thread in vcfed.org about the 90's. herb -- Herbert R. Johnson, New Jersey USA http://www.retrotechnology.com OR .net
They are completely different and operate on completely different principles. The SyQuest disks are simply removable rigid metal hard disk platters. Bernoulli cartridges use flexible floppy disk like media and non-contact heads - they don't touch due to the Bernoulli principle, hence the name. I have several working Bernoulli 90 drives, I used them for *years*. I love those things. -Ian On Tue, Nov 15, 2016 at 5:03 PM, Herb Johnson via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

I think WierdStuff Warehouse has some carts for them in the baaack right. Warehouse section back right. (Don't live in that area was there for a work trip.) And I mean the old school Syquest stuff, none of that SparQ drive newness. Maybe Bernoulli as well.

As Ian said they are not compatible. I have several variations (3.5" & 5.25") of the syquest drives and they still work to this day. In my experience the 3.5" carts were somewhat more reliable, but I'm sure mileage will vary based on individual use. Obviously some cartridges have died over the decades but overall they've proven fairly reliable for me.....not that I use them for archiving anymore but they're great for moving files between machines that don't have a 10baseT connection (and oh so much faster than phonenet network!) A viable Zip drive replacement/stand in if your zips are busy on other machines. Tony

Others have addresses the compatibility issue. I recently acquired a box with two 90MB Bernoulli drives, only one of which is working. I only have one cartridge to play with. Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/
Bernoulli drives are cool, I have some 90 MB, 150 and 230 MB drives, all external SCSI. The 230 MB ones are capacious enough and fast enough to support 2 Channel CD Quality AIFF playback and recording, may even have been able to do 4 channels, but cant remember. Worked great with Sound Designer II on a Quadra 840 AV and later with Audacity on various Power macs.
