Do milestones mean less as you have more of them?
Today I did PDP-8 chase-the-lights from the front panel "all by myself" ... last time Jeff B. and I helped each other. Feels good to use that intimidating front panel and have it work the first time without anyone watching over my shoulder for mistakes. Next time (Wednesday): paper tape! Going to try to load some programs by following DG's instructions. -- Evan Koblentz, executive director Vintage Computer Federation www.vcfed.org evan@vcfed.org (646) 546-9999 VCF is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization.

Good to hear your getting more comfortable with it. Hearing about the machines being used is the reward for spending time fixing them.

I appreciate your patience with teaching me and with waiting for me to have the time/ambition to try it. I felt bad telling you "not yet" so many times. On Sun, Feb 24, 2019, 9:24 AM David Gesswein via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

You eventually realize that all of these old machines operate on the same basic principles and it becomes less "magic." For me, that does not detract from the fun and excitement of hacking on old computers. Yes, when I first started trying to collect "all" of the Ohio Scientific computer types, I soon realized that they were all pretty much the same with a few variations on video RAM layout and keyboard decoding. After my initial disappointment, I came to appreciate the individual history of each box. It also increased my interest in the "business class" machines because they had more interesting peripherals like hard drive controllers, multiple processors and hardware bank switching/context swapping.
