Monitor repair class test subjects
I'm getting my material ready for the monitor repair class I'm doing on Friday, and Jason I know is bringing a monitor with some faults as an example. Looking around, I seem to have fixed most of the broken things i had laying around that were obvious. I'll keep looking, but, has anyone got a monitor that has a fault that they think would make a good demonstration? I *think* Will had one he said he could bring that has messed up vertical, I can ask him to bring that along if he has it handy. But if anyone else has anything convenient, let me know. Preferably monitors that either are self contained terminals, or take composite video, to make getting some video on the screen simpler with limited amounts of hardware. Thanks! -Ian

There is a Commodore monitor that needs repairing in the VCF warehouse. It smoked when Dan and I used it last year. I'm sure that there are many more that need it. On Thu, Mar 23, 2017 at 8:09 PM, corey cohen via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

That's true, there are probably a few different broken things in the warehouse. Did you remember to capture and save the smoke so I can put it back in? -Ian On Thu, Mar 23, 2017 at 8:35 PM, Jeffrey Brace via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Joking aside: the cool thing about us having spent the last two years organizing everything is now we can point you to the monitor aisle. They're all one in place alphabetically under "M" in the warehouse (seriously).
Thanks for the help, guys. Sounds like I should have plenty of things. I know Jason has one monitor for me with smearing, Tony has a few with various problems - that should be plenty, and good contingency in case Donzelli can't find the one he has with the vertical issues, or doesn't make it before the class, since mine is first thing in the morning on Friday. This is only a one hour long class, I don't have time to go over everything, and I don't see myself being able to even get to all those monitors in depth - but having some examples of common problems is, I think, useful. -Ian
Yes! I did save the smoke! I have it in a zip lock bag. I save *everything*. I'm a hoarders hoarder. You never know when you can use some capacitor smoke. It can be quite handy sometimes when repairing monitors. On Thu, Mar 23, 2017 at 10:03 PM, Ian Primus via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Awesome. You know how hard it is to find date code correct capacitor smoke? I assume you were careful where you stored it. Worst thing is to find the perfect smoke, but it was stored wrong and now isn't salvageable. corey cohen uǝɥoɔ ʎǝɹoɔ

Those old Sony TVs are a pain to take apart, so that might not make the best test subject. What about the Sanyo - is that composite? Color or mono? -Ian On Thu, Mar 23, 2017 at 8:39 PM, william degnan via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

I have an Apple III color monitor with a shorted electrolytic (pretty obvious). I also have a video signal generator you're welcome to borrow, an Extron VTG-200: Rates: VGA-UXGA, Apple/Mac/Quadra, Sun/SGI/NeXT/IBM Power PC, TTL, HDTV Signal types: RGBHV, RGBS, RGsB, RsGsBs, NTSC/PAL, composite video Connectors: 5 BNC female, 1 BNC female, 1 15-pin HD female, 1 15-pin D female, 1 13W3 D female, 1 9-pin D female Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/
The Apple III color monitor (Monitor 100) is a heavy, complicated beast. While I can definitely repair it, it's probably going to be a bit beyond what I can cover in a short class. I'm really looking for something simpler, that's easier to take apart and explain. -Ian On Thu, Mar 23, 2017 at 8:39 PM, Mike Loewen via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

I have an apple color Monitor 100 that doesn't power on. You're welcome to try that one. If there is something in particular you think would be a good example/challenge let me know. I've got a number of non-working monitors that I've tested and labeled the symptoms. Let me know if there's something you're looking for, perhaps I have it. The monitor 100 weighs a ton but if you want I can bring it (and a computer and the rgb card to drive it if needed) Tony Sent from my iPhone
