Too NEW! You should be running Minix ;) Just kidding. Looks pretty cool. I never played with Linux 1.0, has a very Motif look. On Thu, May 4, 2023 at 4:27 PM Kelly Leavitt via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Absolutely fantastic. I'm guessing the window manager in use was fvwm, but I'm not certain. -Dave On 5/4/23 16:44, Christian Liendo via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

In 1991, I was running ESIX System V Release 4 (4.0.3A) on a 386-20 with X11. The initial window manager was twm. I didn't switch over to Linux until 1995, on a 486-66. That was Slackware 2.2.0, running Linux kernel 1.2.1. I still have the diskette images for Slackware, if anyone wants to install it. :-) http://q7.neurotica.com/ESIX.jpg Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/

Kelly, If you mean is early Linux on topic, I say certainly yes. It's vintage from the era of "early WWW workstation/server" at least. I have a SUSE Linux for 386 manuals and disks but it has been a while since I had it installed on anything. WHen the WWW era broke I was using VMS, starting in 1995 or so I went to Sun OS web developement (Perl).and then FreBSD. Towards the end of the 90's I got my first linux server it came with Red Hat Linux 6, Dell Poweredge 2400 server, but I erased and put FreBSD on it because that's what we were still using. Bill

Sitting in front of me is SlackWare 10 running on an IBM PC 110, still boots and can do X. Not sure OS version, but Linux 2.X I think. Kinda new compared to everyone else, but the unit still triple boots, DOS, Linux, Windows 95 OSR2 Jim -- RETRO Innovations, Contemporary Gear for Classic Systems www.go4retro.com store.go4retro.com
Hello! And it is also the oldest. It predates all of the ones favored by IBM for example by about 5 to ten years. I run Slackware 15 on most of the Linux machines at home and the shop! Still a great distro.
Thanks, Jonathan

ESIX was a damn fine OS. I had an account on a friend's ESIX system in the early 1990s and liked it quite a lot. Not quite as much as my SunOS machines, mind you, but a lot. :) -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA
Sweet. For a recent DFW retro meetup, I recreated the systems I was running in December 1991. I had to buy a couple of new laptops--A 286 to run Coherent, and a 386 to run the Linux 0.11 boot/root pair. I wasn't able to get shoelace installed in time. Given the need for vintage hadware and the gulf between those systems and current ones, the complexity of getting X up and running on those old systems, and how much fun it is to see those old systems running, I'd certainly argue that early Linux (Or FreeBSD/Minix/Coherent/Xinu) is retro.
