Yeah, I know it's already taken.
Someone already made that reference. It's also been suggested (I forget by whom) that we are already pushing the limits of credibility, at least in the eyes of prospective grant-making organizations, by having the Trekkie joke in our name/logo at all. The organization name/logo is not going to change at this point, but I am convinced that we should not delve any further into Trek-ness with it. It gets a tad TOO nerdy at that point. I'm increasingly confident that we should just hang a big VCF logo as our sign and leave it at that. InfoAge visitors may wonder: what is the VCF space? Is it a museum, warehouse, office, workshop, event center, or something else? Well, let them come inside and see. :)

My .02 Spent my life dealing with the public on a face to face basis since I was about 7. Acronyms are great, but don't necessarily convey any information to Infoage visitors. While I haven't been around Infoage for long, every visitor I've spoken to didn't understand what the "MARCH" museum was when asked if they had been there but instantly understood what it was when asked "have you been to the vintage computer museum?" The name should immediately and as clearly as possible convey what it is to the customer/visitor if at all possible. Vintage computer federation museum or vintage computer museum or equivalent. Or, the F.A.R.T. Museum :-)
Being serious here. I don't know why people don't opt to add NJ into the title. Something as simple as "New Jersey Museum of Computing History." Is correct and to the point. The fact that NJ was and still is a major part of computing should be part of this. And it sounds CREDIBLE, which is the #1 most important factor here. One need only look at established, respected museums to see that they don't have childish or "fun" names. We all love Star Trek, but that needs to stay in our living rooms if any of this is to be taken seriously. Whenever I've told people about the MARCH museum, I've always referred to it as "the computer museum at the InfoAge Science Center", to avoid the inevitable expansion of MARCH to "Mid-Atlantic Retrocomputing Hobbyists"...That conjures an image of thirty-somethings living in their parents' basement playing old games, not a scholarly institution with a lofty purpose. People will travel for and respect the latter...not the former. I agonized for years, literally years, over the name of the museum we started out here. I even "settled on" a couple of names that, after sitting in my mind for a few months, I grew to dislike. I eventually decided on "Large Scale Systems Musuem" as it is refined, understated, not childish, and respectable, while getting the point across as to what the place actually IS. The only failing of that name (in my opinion) is that it doesn't convey the notion of machines being running and demonstrable, as the Living Computer Museum's name very nicely does. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

That's why I started this thread by asking for an alternative to "living" since that is already taken. I also said that we'd be very happy to have an equally ideal one-word synonym for "community center" since we're more than just a museum. Best of all would be if that word starts with 'F' to fit our scheme of Festivals / Forum / ???? but I know that's asking a lot.

Yes. Something that encompasses everything you want to represent, while still having a nice "ring" to it is going to be tough. I will keep noodling on it, but I'm historically very bad at coming up with names. (for most anything..) -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA
VCF's Interactive Historical Computing (or Computer) Museum at InfoAge Science Center. Everyone would just call it the "Interactive Historical Comput[er,ing] Museum" or IHCM or something. "Historical," in my mind, reflects that it's important, not just old. You could throw "of New Jersey" on the end, too. My two cents anyway. Two hard things in computer science: cache invalidation, naming things, and off-by-one errors. Thanks, Jonathan

The Society for Historical Computing at the InfoAge Science Center? The NJ Society for Historical Computing at the InfoAge Science Center? The NJ Society for Historical Computing? The idea of using society was to make it important but social. Alternatives were "association, club, group, circle, fellowship, guild, lodge, fraternity, brotherhood, sisterhood, sorority, league, union, alliance" Fellowship sounds too Tolken. I like Guild.

Evan, it's very simple I made an attempt to come up with a name for the museum that highlights our mission for our museum and InfoAge's as whole. I felt angry at Dave's public and merciless flaming of my attempt.
