So WTF Is Absynthia
From their KickStarter https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1426283174/steampunk-science-fiction-tv...
"Sick of Hollywood remakes and a lack of original ideas? Well Absynthia is a new original idea with strong female characters, the men who love them (who have secrets of their own), AND a drama to rival all dramas!" They have a Twitter account as well. https://twitter.com/AbsynthiaRyan In short someone allowed them access to the room for filming, because I doubt that much work can go on without anyone noticing.
Christopher Bachman got the vast majority of my back and forth on the facebook page with this group. Many of their comments were childish taunts or rants, but they made it clear that they not only signed all necessary documents with IA but that they were given express permission to touch, move and manipulate the items in the museum. Again, this is according to them, so take that for what it's worth. This is an issue that worries me greatly, and others have already commented on. I won't discuss it further, the points been made by others already as to how big a deal that is. One of the comments made in my exchange with this group was something like "if they're this upset with photos wait till they see the film" or words to that effect. If it is ever felt the need is there, perhaps there is something to be done about the fact that VCF property is being used in a film without VCF's express permission. Maybe not, just something to keep in mind if this situation escalates. Hopefully it won't and this is the end of it as relates to this specific incident. The liability issue is something I raised with the people I was going back and forth with, but unfortunately my comments were deleted moments after I made them. The liability to infoage is a big deal, but not my first concern. The potential that someone could be injured is what worries me most, with the potential liability to VCF right there with it. IA needs to watch out for itself, VCF simply needs to be sure it/we don't put IA in an untenable situation, which of course we would never intentionally do. How this can be dealt with in the future (a similar situation to what happened yesterday) is above my pay grade with VCF. I'm not a board member so I'm not privy to how this has been and will be dealt with. I have my own feelings/ideas, of course. However, my goal in writing this is to say I will gladly help in any way I can now and in the future to assure something like this never happens again. From email exchanges I've had since last night I know many others feel the same way. How big a check did IA get? Maybe our group deserves a cut since it was the VCF artifacts being used for filming! ;-) Tony

Negotiating fail.... Being some distance away, forgive the stupid question, but.. VCFed owns all the artifacts in the museum out-right - both on display and warehoused - correct? You just rent the space from IA for a low rate and in exchange you agree to exhibit the collection as a permanent display at IA? -Alan

We own the vast majority. A tiny percentage are owned by IA or are on loan to VCFed.

Basically yes.

That's pretty pathetic. Their comment was basically "after the big check we wrote out the guy was happy to let us do whatever we wanted." $500......... Whatever.

This could make the computers worth more if the show is a hit? Like the screen-used IMSAI from WarGames? - Ethan

Are you kidding? There are thousands of these groups of kids who think they're God's gift to the film world. Most them sling burgers at McDonald's and live in their parents' basements. They typically do this until their folks throw them out and they have to redirect their costume and equipment rental funds toward paying for rent and groceries. This happens all the time. IA was never going to hear from these kids again anyway. "Drama to rival all dramas" indeed. I've little doubt that that's the case, but not in the way they meant. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA

Actually, it was humor. But I know I'd love that IMSAI... *Shrug* never know. Groups like Epic Mealtime and Freddie Wong and other YouTube celebs have earned over a million bucks (Quick google said Epic Mealtime was $700K in ad revenue in 2014, Freddie Wong is at $6 million?) Not sure what LGR is doing but youtube is his full time job afaik, strictly making videos about classic computers. Gotta have a good personality for it or be entertaining tho. There are a lot of kids trying to make money from the whole watch-me-play-videogames Twitch thing. I assume it's a crowded market, not sure what the revenue from that is. And I won't fault or put down the younger generation for working fast food gigs or anything, especially given current state of job opportunities and future outlook of the same. - Ethan

No disagreement here, but that's a few, and there are more than that just in my town who think the same will happen for them.

It seems there are half a dozen people making a killing doing that, and couple million people who are "planning" to do the same. Just like the above, there's nothing wrong (and everything right) with being hopeful...but hanging your livelihood on becoming the next Ben Affleck isn't a good risk to take, IMO.
And I won't fault or put down the younger generation for working fast food gigs or anything, especially given current state of job opportunities and future outlook of the same.
Of course not, and neither would I. But *adults* doing that, and being ok with it, is what I have a problem with. Leave those jobs for the teenage kids; that's how nearly all of them get their first taste of the working world. -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA
I watched their trailer. This show will not be a hit unless i missed something huge. The 3D is really really really poor (even by shows produced on Commodore Amiga standards). The greenscreened in backgrounds are weak even by daytime news standards. The acting was pretty weak. It can be saved, maybe, if the script writing is good. Big maybe though. Their only claim to fame seems to be 'we are not Hollywood and this is not a rework of a previous thing', Also far as I am aware the IMSAI from Wargames, though put up for auction for gobs of money on its 'fame', had not sold for those gobs.
