Air Quality Index and the swap meet
Are there any backup plans in the works if the AQI happens to be bad or hazardous on Saturday? We might get lucky, but it looks like it's supposed to be bad on Friday.
n90 mask? I have a non-cancelable room Friday night. I hope the swap meet is not canceled. On 6/7/2023 4:40 PM, Jason k via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

I personally plan on wearing an N95 mask if I can smell smoke. InfoAge is further south than NYC where it is worst and is near the ocean so the wind should keep the air cleaner. corey cohen uǝɥoɔ ʎǝɹoɔ Sent from my iPhone

According to this, it's pretty yucky right now. Mask would probably help https://gispub.epa.gov/airnow/?contours=ozonepm&monitors=none&showlegend=yes... ________________________________ From: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vcfed.org> on behalf of corey cohen via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 7, 2023 5:46 PM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: corey cohen <coreyvcf@gmail.com>; Jason k <phantomtypist@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Air Quality Index and the swap meet I personally plan on wearing an N95 mask if I can smell smoke. People in New York saying that it’s clearing up however I just took a ride from Monroe to Asbury Park and back to Edison and it was bad today late afternoon. Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

Actually, from what I am reading, additional pollution from the Canadian fires is less than what you would "normally" get in any US urban area. So, if you are in downtown NYC, you will get almost double your "normal" exposure to airborne pollution. But, in Wall, adjacent to the ocean, you will get less than a trip to NYC on a "normal" day. Think of it as a trip to the city. On 6/7/2023 4:40 PM, Jason k via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

Hello Jason K, Thank you for bringing up this issue. Until today there wasn't a major issue, but with the AQI at 190 in the Wall area as I type this, this is a serious situation. At this level it is considered unhealthy. Almost to the "very unhealthy" level. Some schools are closing because there isn't any A/C. The school where I worked cancelled recess and all sports activities. Some kids were sent home because they felt sick. People started wearing masks, but lots of coughing when going outside and some kids feeling sick. My current plan which may change is: evaluate conditions tomorrow and make a call. If I do end up cancelling, then I will look at the next available date that looks good. The next date that we have already reserved for our repair workshop is July 8 & 9. I would most likely choose July 8 as the next swap meet. There doesn't appear to be any other events that conflict with this date. I want to make the call by tomorrow because I know people are traveling from a distance and want to give as much notice as possible. I'm also mindful of the volunteers helping me to setup the signs and staging the truck with swag and setup materials on Friday. There are also the "buyers" to consider if they would be willing to come out in such conditions. I do realize also that Friday there is rain expected and that has a way of clearing things out, but I would rather make a call and be safe than sorry. It's possible for me to just cancel the swap meet and still do the repair workshop as it is indoors and less of a problem. There is a lot to consider. Hello! According to the weather forecasters on NBC 4, it is expected to be largely gone by Saturday.. There's supposed to be showers and stuff on Friday and even much clearer air by this time tomorrow. But a lot of people were wearing masks, and so forth. Jeff if you do ahead and cancel this weekend's swap meet and throw it again on that weekend in July, then you've got my support. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." I'm on Long Island right next to the water. Being near the water doesn't help because it's blowing south. It's in the high 300's here. It's so thick here you'd swear you were actually in the fire. N95 masks are doing squat at this point. Hopefully the jet stream shifts in a different direction by Saturday, but if it turns for the worse I may have to skip this weekend. Crossing fingers. ________________________________ From: Gregg Levine <gregg.drwho8@gmail.com> Sent: Wednesday, June 7, 2023 6:21:40 PM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: Jeffrey Brace <jeffrey@vcfed.org>; Jason k <phantomtypist@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Air Quality Index and the swap meet Hello! That's a good point Jeff with regards to the buyers. I remember at the first swap meet during the middle of COVID a good chunk of the people that stopped by at my table to chat were from NYC and the north/east tri-state area. I'd have to wonder if it's moderately bad in those locations Saturday they might not venture out even if it was clear in Wall. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ ________________________________ From: Jeffrey Brace <jeffrey@vcfed.org> Sent: Wednesday, June 7, 2023 6:10:06 PM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: Jason k <phantomtypist@hotmail.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Air Quality Index and the swap meet Hello Jason K, Thank you for bringing up this issue. Jeff, respectfully you have a very hard decision to make. I am hoping that if you do decide to reschedule you take into consideration any other Hamfests in the New Jersey area. Please Of course you have to consider all of the volunteers, vendors and attendees also. Personally I will do my best to spread the word if it does change but that’s going to be a tough one. Mike R. Yes. It has come down to a safer level of 156 at the moment. I want to check some more predictions and send out an email by 10PM at the latest tonight with a definitive answer.
