Unix demo @ Bell Labs - June 5
This is tentative / not yet 100%: Bell Labs (at the historic Murray Hill, NJ location) is planning a Unix event on Wednesday, May 5. They invited us to do a mini-version of Unix Town that afternoon. Important details: - We'd probably have five or six tables. - This is NOT a public event; it's invitation-only by BL. - Our goal is to do demos for important people. So I'm gauging initial interest: who is able to take a day off from work that afternoon and come to NJ for this?

It's official now, and it's delayed. The event is Wednesday, October 23 and VCF is invited to have demos there. I visited this morning and saw the space where we'll be. We can fit about 10 tables. There is a freight elevator and we don't have to deal with any stairs. They are looking into 220V in case we need that. This is NOT a public event: it's invitation-only. VCF can bring a finite number of people. I don't yet have an exact number but right now the offer is for people who can do VCF East-style booths. BL will be setting up their own exhibit in the same room. There will also be speeches by BL alums (presumably including Ken, Brian, etc.) and there will be lab tours (we're welcome to take part; I've already had the tour a couple of times over the years.) Hours are not yet set. You should expect to need the whole day off work. Sign up here: https://tinyurl.com/y5wnuzs9 We'll also have a dress code for this event. Yes I know it's not in the spirit of Unix greybeards :) but everyone should wear khakis (or better) and a collared shirt (ideally a VCFed polo; not MARCH; Jeff B. can speak to our remaining inventory of VCFed shirts). We are guests of Bell Labs and we should look professional.
Sounds awesome. Find out if we can scavenge for abandoned vintage gear in their sub-sub basement. We will haul old Unix severs out for free. 😐 - andy diller

I'm 90% sure I should be able to make this, I've signed up provisionally and will double-check ASAP. I'd like to bring my PDP-11/44 running some late Unix version (either SVR1, to pay homage to our hosts, or 2.11BSD, to show what the end stage looked like, maybe both?). That box needs a lot of juice; the CPU with cards alone runs something like 8A, and the drives (RA9x, so somewhat small) are going to need some power, too. It doesn't need 220v, but can we get some indication that they can handle the current in the demo room? - Dave

That sounds sweet. I have an 11/44 that I need to overhaul. I've always kept it in mind for 2.11BSD. It's so much easier to put together a decent Qbus system that it's not often one gets to see a decently-decked-out Unibus system. -ethan

I heard back from BL. They provided another update: now it's a two-day event (22/23) and we are invited to exhibit on the afternoon of the 22nd. I'm waiting to hear more about the electrical power situation. -Evan

The latest: they're scheduling the demo area from 2pm-5pm, but they are looking for a way to change their schedule so the demo area can be more like 1-6 ... this combined with a couple of hours set-up time for us makes it an all-day commitment, which is what I expected anyhow. They can install whatever power we need including a couple of 208 circuits. Participation in this demo can NOT be a last-minute decision. So I'm making a deadline: anyone who wants to demo there MUST sign up by Friday, September 30. Demos must include some flavor of Unix and must be hands-on, just like at VCF East.

Even, If any of the VCF members that are exhibiting wants to do a dial-up demo, they are welcome to borrow (for the event) my Teletone Line emulator. Manual can be found at: http://compdecon.org/manuals/telecomm/TelTone%20TLS-5%20USER-2.pdf so it can be evaluated for Martin On 8/13/2019 8:37 PM, Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

I'm going to look into LUnix or GeckOS for the Commodore 64. What kind of hands-on demos are you looking for? On Tue, Aug 13, 2019 at 8:37 PM Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:
