Top post here, since its not chnging the signup sheet, since I will not be at VCF-E but here are a frew tips to make things better. 1. Biggest pet pieve here, uninteliagable, noisy audio, at the minimum if you are using a phone/tablet place it on something that holds the device so therte is not a bunch of handeling noise. If possible connect an external microphone that can be placed closer to the speaker, the acoustics in most of those rooms are really not tjhat great and you get a lot of room echo. 2.2nd biggest pet peive here, if you are shooting with a smartphone/tablet please hold/mount it in landscape mode. TV's left a 3x2 aspect ratio once John Logie Baird's mechanical TV failed. 3. Whoever is going to take on the editing should tell the volenteers what format they need video in, that way you are not mixing SD,720P, 10801 and 1080P. They can be mixed but to make it work properly and look good takes more work and a lot more rendering time. 4. Please use a tripod, there are even tripods for smartphones, they are kind of crappy but do help. I won’t be at the VCF either, but I agree 100% with Matt. Good audio is critical. A mic with a long lead is probably the easiest remedy. Sometimes, an audio recording device can be used to capture the sound, but it’s not always possible to synchronize it with a video sound track. I’d suggest using 720P for the recording format. Almost any modern TV can handle it well. Second choice would be 1080i. Both are very close in quality, and help conserve memory on solid state cameras. 73 de Ray K2ULR

Thanks guys for the great technical recommendations. I'm hoping there is a person going to each event that has a real camcorder and a tripod! Having videoed a few weddings on a shoe string I know how the close mic is generally so important to the spoken voice. Maybe next time we can prepare some laveliers somehow and a bunch of cables and adapters to get the signal into any recording device that might present itself. You're both right, but we are dealing with very limited resources here.
Let's please NOT make this another "You guys should..." thread.
We are all doing our best. It is an amateur event and that's fine.
Hi Doug, I plan to be at VCF tomorrow between 945am and 4pm at the latest. I can volunteer to video at least some events in-between those times. I would like to see the CRT repair session, so that one’s for sure. Beyond that, I am free to shoot whatever. I will bring two cameras, a tripod, AC adaptors for both cameras, and at least one 25’ extension cord. I can picture the following schedule for myself tomorrow… 1010am tent 2 - image capture 1120am museum bldg - CRT repair Afterwards we work out what else there is for me to do. Doug, should I look for you in the morning? Or someone else? Or just show up at tent 2 and plunk myself down? One thing I could use is access to an electrical outlet as I hope to plug in my camera - no telling how long the battery will hold out. -----Original Message----- From: vcf-midatlantic [mailto:vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org] On Behalf Of Douglas Crawford via vcf-midatlantic Sent: Tuesday, April 12, 2016 5:37 PM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> Cc: Douglas Crawford <touchetek@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Volunteer signup sheet for recording VCFEast Classes Thanks guys for the great technical recommendations. I realized halfway here that I forgot my tripod... oops. I have my camera though. I'm planning on attending the Apple 1 restoration, image capture, CRT, and teletype sessions. Doug, I would suggest using Google Sheets to make a signup sheet. It is more organized. I would like to signup for Growing 8bit, Advanced Troubleshooting and Early Mac Repair. I have a 2001 hi-8 Sony Camcorder or a Nikon S9700 camera that can record video. I have tripods for both.
