Recapping a Mac IIci
All — I have an Apple IIci main board that need recapping. Does anyone know of someone that does this? I bought a recapping kit and tried it on my spare machine and it doesn’t seem to work (I get the bing but no video; no explosion at least) but I’d rather not try it on the main machine. Thanks! Ok, looks like it works...sort of. The soft power switch seems to keep turning the machine on, and the Radius 8-bit video card isn’t working with this board (not sure why). But, at least it’s running. I suspect there is an issue with the power switch itself on this board, and the positioning of it (the twist, horizontal or vertical) doesn’t seem to matter. I did swap power supplies and that has no effect. I’d still like to get the other board recapped and working again. If there is no real “service” for this any longer, I could do it again. It was just a little nerve wracking for me. I found that the solder Apple used doesn’t melt well with a regular iron and I would up lifting a pad getting a cap off. I know this may not be ROHS compliant but: Use standard 60/40 rosin core solder of the correct diamete. basically a thin diameter. It will melt faster and be easier work to with. especially smaller components. I know I might get a little flak for this but it’s what I do and it’s older equipment.
