Computer terminal in WarGames
Does anyone know what terminal was used as the operators’ console terminal in McKittrick’s office in WarGames? It’s the terminal that’s near the window that overlooks the war room. It has some words on the front but I can’t make them out. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uCWKZWieMSY If you fast forward to about the 4-minute mark you can see it. Thanks! I believe it's a Memorex 2051 Model 11. http://bitsavers.org/pdf/memorex/terminal/2051/Memorex_2051_Model_11_Display... Thanks, Kyle
Yup, that would be it. Thanks! Also, what is the display make/model in his bedroom? At first I thought it was an USi but I don't think so. b On Thu, Jun 14, 2018 at 3:04 PM Richard Cini via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

I thought it was an Electrohome monitor? The speaker box was made up. Todd Fischer had the original WarGames prop system, and has the IMSAI name I think? At least that is what I believe his name was (it's been a while. Nice guy, I chatted with him over email for a bit.) War Games is the reason I wanted an IMSAI. Checked that one off, but do not have the matching floppy drive set from the movie (those are now a bit expensive.) One day. I believe the WOPR prop had one of the earliest LCD screens as well. - Ethan
Me too. I have a nice IMSAI system but not the IMSAI floppies like you. Anyone know off hand what was used for the speech synthesis? It doesn't sound like the GI or Digitalker chips. I'd like to get one of the modems. I have a nice Hayes 300 external and a PMMI internal. Wasn't it a Votrax? I'm pretty sure it was a Votrax. (SC-01) -Dave -- Dave McGuire, AK4HZ New Kensington, PA
It's that VOX chip you see in a number of devices, forget the part number. Speak and spell and so on. b On Thu, Jun 14, 2018 at 7:23 PM Dave McGuire via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

That is very much not a Votrax SC-01A. It's far too intelligible to be an SC-01A. I'm almost certain that the WOPR's voice wasn't synthesized at all, and instead was made from modified voice recordings. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson
WarGames used a real vocoder and professor falken actor voice to make computer synth speech as I recall. Not real digital speech.

It’s a Memorex, possibly a 2051. https://archive.org/details/bitsavers_memorexter1Model11DisplayStationMay81_... Best, Thomas F.
