Has anyone thought of the VCFED hosting a Mastodon instance?
Look, I know that this probably going nowhere, but there is currently an interest in people posting to something other than Twitter because of Elon Musk. I've been on Mastodon for a couple of years, and it has its flaws, but a VCFED Mastodon instance wouldn't be the worst idea on the planet. One of the flaws with Mastodon is that its like Twitter if it was open-protocol and made up of clusters of special interest groups. If we had a VCFED Mastodon open only to members of VCFED (we could make membership to this mailing list a prereq to joining the instance), then the instance's local timeline would be full of posts from this community. As opposed to the tech.lgbt instance I am on, where the local timeline are just a bunch of people that happen to be queer like me... I feel like a timeline full of folks I just spent three days sharing an exhibit hall with would be more of an actual community. The twitter takeover is cool. Seems like a good time to support twitter? Fascinating times. They are burning all the evidence now of the manipulations that have been going on, to swap public opinoons and stuff. Large swaths of followers disappearing from some users, appearing for other users. Wild times.

One of the big problem with things (like Facebook) is the lack of indexability of solutions. Not that Google is indexing things very good these days, but still having solutions able to be archived and indexed is a good thing. How does Mastodon work in that sense? I am only slightly familiar with Mastodon. I signed up for that Minds platform which seems sort of interesting but haven't logged back in. Another issue is just bandwidth. Between E-Mail, IRC, Slack, Teams, Discord, forums, Telegram, SMS/Signal ... one just runs out of mental and time bandwidth for all of these different platforms -- so now I find I give less attention to them all? Not sure how other people deal with it. It's cool though supporting new things. I was planning for every video I upload to Youtube to also upload it to those other oddball platforms. Perhaps VCF could give you a VM on their server to set up the Mastodon thing then see how it goes, but I for me the mailing list is my prime interaction. I'm on Discord but really don't look at it often since there is too much going on there. - Ethan

As badly as you. I'm not overly well read, so maybe there's been lots of discussion on this topic, but your comment above is the first time I've seen the issue spelled out. It probably needs a name, as I can't imagine it's specific to tech topics/hobbies. Jim

Okay, understand folks that an instance is not a siloed environment. It is one location that's connected to the rest of the mastodon universe. I understand that folks ar enot keen on yet another ghost town of a chat room that doesn't have anyone on it, but while you can tell your mastodon client to only show you things on the instance, you'd be missing out on most of the traffic. I'm on mastodon.social, which ist he largest instance, but i follow people on dozens of other instances. I really recommend folks go ahead and create themselves a login on an instance - doenst' matter where ( here's a list: https://github.com/McKael/mastodon-documentation/blob/master/Using-Mastodon/... ) - and try it out. If we do end up making a VCF specific one, there's a basic tool to 'move' your login from one instance to another, and any references to your old login will redirect (and all your content will move too). I know it goes without saying, but just a reminder that no one (not that they would) should create any social media presence on VCF's behalf. As Jeff stated, if it has VCF's name on it then VCF needs to make sure any social media presence is properly moderated. This is my own humble opinion. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, this is just how I see platforms like Twitter and I guess Mastodon I don't use twitter because I don't like the format, same with instagram and discord. The 280 character limit and the hierarchy turns me off. The whole having to make 10 posts to explain something is infuriating. It's also why I like YouTube over Tik Tok. Tik Tok is too short. Discord is chat and I don't have time for that. IRC has been around for years. I don't do that either. I am on reddit because I like the format. There are subreddits, The posts are about a topic and the flow is based on that post. Reddit's editing system allows you to make complex posts. When I ask a question I can give a lot of detail and same when answering. I know reddit has awful subreddits but I stay within the ones I like. I know twitter is bad as well. I am on facebook for my friends but honestly the computer groups have become intolerable. The number of dumb posts and memes have made groups a waste. The VCF Forum, is pretty good because it is focused, has a good number of dedicated people and you can get and share a lot of good info on there. https://forum.vcfed.org I'm not against VCF utilizing Mastodon, they use Twitter. I just won't use either. My two cents.

I see little downside to giving Mastodon a trial. I created a login on the SDF Mastodon instance but have yet to learn how to use it. The problem may be that there is no content I find interesting. BTW, I use my SDF email address (js@sdf.org) on this list because it works well with the Pine email client. This is my own humble opinion. I'm not saying anyone is wrong, this is just how I see platforms like Twitter and I guess Mastodon
I don't use twitter because I don't like the format, same with instagram and discord.
I'm not against VCF utilizing Mastodon, they use Twitter. I just won't use either.
My two cents.

Jim: If you, or anyone else on the list, have any questions about how to get started with, or how to use Mastodon, or any of the fediverse programs, please reach out to me off-list, and I'll be happy to help. Didn't want to turn the mailing list into an off-topic tutorial on a decidedly non-vintage service.
I have never heard of Mastodon. I would be in favor of VCF creating an instance there if there would be people who would use it and VCF could get moderators to support it. As it is now VCF has Twitter, Instagram and Facebook moderated by Adam Michlin. The VCF Forum moderated by Alex Jacocks, Jarrod Coombes, and others. This Mid-Atlantic list moderated by me. The Discord server moderated by me. Places not well supported or not setup: IRC, Mastodon, Reddit, MeetUp, Craigslist, etc. I would love to have VCF on every platform, but it is difficult without adequate volunteers to do this. I realize that everyone has a particular way that they prefer to communicate and be informed. Some like Discord, some like this e-mail list, some like Twitter, some like Facebook. I think that it is great that everyone has a place that they prefer and like to use. From a management point of view, it is more work to post the same message to 10 different platforms. The main issue as I see it is supporting the different areas, moderating them and growing them. This takes dedicated volunteers. We don't always have that, so we support what we can with the volunteers that we do have. Jeff Brace

Hopefully it does go nowhere. Musk buying twitter may finally make it more balanced. Now is the time to support twitter and start tweeting more about VCF and our events and equipment. I'm personally fascinated by all the new revelations and misgivings about twitter _all of a sudden_. All of a sudden twitter is some horrible thing that will silence people - it's been doing that for years. If anything there will be less silence. Democracy dies in silence. -andy

Here’s why *I’m* worried about the Twitter acquisition, at least: Simply existing as a trans person on the internet invites unprompted harassment. Changes to Twitter’s content moderation policies in recent years have improved the experience for us and other marginalized groups. If Musk undoes these changes and more, it will almost certainly enable more harassment and drive people off the site... thereby enabling the free speech of bigots but silencing their targets. Now, I've also used Mastodon for most of its existence, and I just don't think it's very good. It has most of the issues of Twitter, but with extra ones piled on top such as a rather small user base, yet terrible discoverability. As others have mentioned, the federated timeline is extremely noisy, and as such your experience is almost entirely dependent on which instance you join. I think forums and mailing lists, both of which VCF already has, are much better formats for an organization like this one. So I would not recommend a Mastodon instance. Deborah
Remember: I'm trans/non-binary. There is a very real concern that as hostile to folks like me as Twitter already is, that Musk makes it even _more_ hostile. -----Original Message----- From: Andrew Diller <dillera@gmail.com> To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: Dan FitzGerald <danjfitzgerald@comcast.net>, Andrew Diller < dillera@gmail.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Has anyone thought of the VCFED hosting a Mastodon instance?
