The subject of asking for help with data recovery has resurfaced because I have a smashed iPhone (long story) with port and buttons still working but screen useless, It is frustrating me that Apple is saying there is absolutely no way to get data off of this device. I know the password, I just can’t type it in. I refuse to pay for iCloud and unfortunately was not consistent with backups. I had an anroid with broken screen so nothing was visible but touchscreen was still working. I took a photo of same model keyboard and taped it to the broken screen so I knew where the key were. With a couple tries was able to type the password in and recover the stuff since the last backup.
" I refuse to pay for iCloud and unfortunately was not consistent with backups." That $3/month has been a Godsend to me on two emergency occasions, and with two new phones since then. This is going back a few years, but my iPhone X ended up under my commercial lawn mower. Blue tooth was still playing in my headphones, but what was left didn't look much like an iPhone X. Apple had a replacement phone to me in a day for $99, and it restored identical to the destroyed one. Then just two months later something similar happened, with the X getting bent in two by an electric ride on - lol. Again, two days later an identical phone. Since then, the iPhone 12 and then 14 restored identical to the previous one. So, for a klutz like me, the $3 monthly iCloud storage is a necessity. If it was any more than $3, I would have to think about it. I have learned my lesson since the X phone. Like someone previously said, take it to a mall and pay the $100 to have a new screen installed on it. The quality of the screen does not matter as long as you can unlock the phone and get your pictures off of it. For me it has always been a pain in the arse to get pictures off an iPhone. They XFER to the cloud very quickly and every now and then, I do a dump from the cloud to local storage. -----Original Message----- From: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vcfed.org> On Behalf Of David Gesswein via vcf-midatlantic Sent: Monday, July 1, 2024 7:27 AM To: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> Cc: David Gesswein <djg@pdp8online.com> Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] [OT] Very OT…desperately seeking data On Mon, Jul 01, 2024 at 06:59:32AM +0000, laurakid via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

Can you use a Thunderbolt or USB 3 type C to DisplayPort/HDMI/whatever adapter? I am admittedly new to the smartphone thing, but most USB 3 type C stuff I've tested seems to Just Work.
That $3/month
I think it's $0.99/month for whatever plan Amy and I share. Initially it was free for up to 5 GB storage. When we reached that we looked at the plan pricing and decided it was absolutely worth $12/year to not have to remember to back up our pictures, nevermind contacts and whatnot! (I realize this does not help the current situation at all) Thanks, Jonathan
Now I admit, I have not backed up my phone either in many years and could run into the same problem at any time, but I thought that if you plugged it into the computer through iTunes, you were able to sync it and download all of your contacts, photos, notes, and such through iTunes Please correct me if I’m wrong. That is what I thought too, but apparently even though computer sees the device, it cannot access data. According to what I have read in forums this is due to encryption and my inability to get the phone to recognize my face or to type in my password. As to recommendations for screen replacement, which I would certainly consider, the phone was on the side of a highway and run over multiple times so it may be more than that. If someone knows a third party repair place they can refer me to I would happily bring it for them to assess. Thank you all for your insights. I actually thought I was gonna be made fun of for some reason lol Here is what phone looks like now: Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPad On Monday, July 1, 2024, 10:05 AM, Sentrytv <sentrytv@yahoo.com> wrote:
Also, as seen on pic, there is hardware that is visible that looks like it could perhaps be removed and data extracted from? I was way too optimistic about my chances based on what wasn’t broken and my outdated idea of how to connect drives etc. Oh… and it is and iPhone 11 Sent from Yahoo Mail for iPad On Monday, July 1, 2024, 2:09 PM, laurakid <laurakid7@yahoo.com> wrote: That is what I thought too, but apparently even though computer sees the device, it cannot access data.
