Dave McMurtrie stated that Andy Finkel and Al Charpentier will be at VCF East
On Facebook Dave McMurtrie stated he will be interviewing Andy Finkel and Al Charpentier at VCF East.
I saw that. Excellent news! Andy and Al have such a wealth of knowledge with regard to the history they experienced, and of course the technology they helped develop. Dave is a great Commodore historian and has been relentless in documenting and preserving all things Commodore. I can't wait to see them all! I like the humor, though I share the underlying concern, which might be ironic since I collect and sell new products for the platform. It's not a hill I'd die on, since I know speaker and presentation topics are somewhat dictated by those who volunteer and commit to making the effort. I mainly just worry about the potential backlash. Has there ever been a good showing for IBM at the show, since they are also East Coast based? I know DEC and other east coast companies have been covered in the past, but I don't recall a lot of IBM (370 and/or AS/400) representation. <rant> I can't get hotels to call me back and that's us trying to get them business. </rant> Seriously though, it is difficult to find and reach out to people and get a response. It is very nice to know that Al Charpentier would be back. This is very cool. No disrespect to Andy Finkel. I just see him more often and he has come to VCF as an attendee. I had a nice conversation with him and Rob Miranda from Great Valley Projects once. Having Andy speak is a treat. I’ve heard this complaint before, “There’s too much Commodore at VCF East”. That is a misperception. Look back at all the speakers from the last few years and count how many are Commodore and how many are not. There are many more that are not Commodore. 2024: 18 talks, 2 about Commodore. That’s 11% 2023: 19 talks, 2 about Commodore, That’s 10% 2022: 18 talks, 6 about Commodore. That’s 33%. 2021: 10 talks, 2 about Commodore. That’s 20% You are misperceiving because they are more prominent. I do my best to find speakers that are popular. They come from many companies. Sometimes speakers are not available, not willing or don’t remember anything. If you want to help me find speakers, then step up. It takes a lot of time, money and effort to find good speakers, ready willing and able. Do you have an IBM speaker to refer me? Send me their contact info and I will invite. We have one slot left.

Even if you are talking about exhibits, then there has been a good showing of non-Commodore. I don’t have the time to calculate those percentages. I’ve already got enough on my plate organizing the show with too little volunteers helping to organize.

It's a bit natural too, that VCF East has content heavy towards what was developed locally, hence heavy commodore and MOS technology inclusion. Fortunately there are foundational celebrities around locally to draw from for speakers and otherwise show up at our events. Other east coast things I can think of off hand of: We've had Franklin (sadly we lost Bob Applegate last year who would bring an extensive Franklin collection), AT&T computers, RCA 1802, and often a good bit of DEC. Likely more Data General coming in the fugure. I'm thinking most everything else locally developed is more obscure or in the enterprise realm rather than personal realm. For better or worse, my involvement with IBM and the midrange and mainframe units is non existent these days, as I've moved on from companies that had a mainframe in house (mostly financial firms). I thought about them mainly because they are more East Coast than some of the other names I remember. Even if you are talking about exhibits, then there has been a good showing of non-Commodore.
Yeah, no, I was thinking speakers. The exhibits seem much more varied each year, so I can't imagine anyone having issues there (well, some folks just want the world to burn, so they'll complain about anything). Jim

It would appear my initial response to Neil's humorous comment has itself been misperceived. Perhaps it's a function of my Midwest tone as viewed through an East Coast lens, or perhaps there's more to this topic to which I am not privy. I would consider it a travesty to withhold such invitations. It's obvious the Commodore luminaries have outsized personalities that may create part of the perception, and it's not fair to hold that against them. Kudos that they cultivate a following and are actively engaged in the community and in events like VCF East. My first thought would be to share some of this context on the vendor/exhibitor/presenter pages, as I think it's valuable. It could also be constructed as an encouragement to the various communities to focus efforts on increasing their community's representation in the show. GAH can we have something over more Commodore!
Just for that, next year will be 75% Commodore speakers!

Sorry, okay not really. ;-)
Actually I'm quite happy, we're having an Atari Classroom this VCF. :-D

To be fair, a tremendous amount of people started their computing experience with Commodore back in the day due too the sheer sales numbers, so it resonates with many (I was a TRS-80/Atari guy back then.) To reiterate what Dean said, the C64 in particular was the first home computer for millions of people. 10s of millions. And toys are so popular it makes perfect sense people remember their favorite childhood toy fondly! ;-) (I duck, then run for cover as Chris Fala and Jeff Brace throw Apple II computers at me) In all seriousness I have to say that all the years I was involved with VCF East first Evan and Jeff then Jeff always had an extremely difficult time getting potential speakers to even respond let alone commit to coming. Facts are that our resident Atari and Commodore experts/former employees/etc (and their former colleagues) simply make themselves available more often and are almost always willing to go above and beyond what we even expected from guest speakers. They just seem, from my perspective, to step up more often. Which has been friggin’ awesome! The fact that they have often stayed long after their talk(s) and made themselves available to the public, sometimes for the entire length of the Festival, may be why it seems we have had a lot of commodore speakers. Not to mention they often show in groups, not just individual speakers, which has also been friggin’ awesome! Tony Bogan Sent from my iPhone

In any case. This is great news because Dave McMurtrie has researched Commodore extensively and is the best candidate to interview them. I am still going to announce this on the livestream, even though it's already on the website and on social media. Having Dave McMurtrie announce this on social media only increases attendance, which .. is .. the goal. Sometimes speakers are shy, reluctant or just plain mediocre when it comes to presentations. So having someone interview them that has extensive knowledge is a fantastic idea. It opens them up, makes them feel relaxed and the questions are really good. In previous VCF Easts, I often used Stephen Edwards to interview people because he has a superior technical background as a Computer Science professor. So it was better for everyone for him to ask questions. On Mon, Feb 5, 2024 at 10:12 AM Christian Liendo via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:
