Help! We need a VCF East keynote speaker
Three months until VCF East. I need to find a keynote speaker for Saturday, May 20. Right now I don't really have any good leads. Looking for realistic suggestions: people who did something important and live reasonably close. ** Nobody should contact any potential speakers on our behalf. Needs to go through me.
I know bob lucky (http://www.boblucky.com/). He's local (NJ).

Not familiar with him, but I checked out his web site. Lots of Bell Labs / Telcordia experience .... what is his role in computer history?
Yes Bob is mostly known in IEEE circles and a veteran of Bell Labs and Bellcore. His main claim to fame was adaptive equalization which essentially enabled telephone line modems to handle 9600 baud (a fourfold advancement in performance at the time). He would be a good speaker to look back at the evolution of IT (he authored the "Reflections" column for IEEE Spectrum for many years, see http://www.boblucky.com/spectrum.htm ) He's been around the industry a very long time and would probably be able to reflect on the evolution of computing and information technology (and the future). And he still lives in the area.

I'm aiming higher. Looking for someone more directly involved in computer history. On Feb 18, 2018 5:40 PM, "Glenn Roberts" <glenn.f.roberts@gmail.com> wrote:

Would it be easier to just list who is *not* on your list for various reasons? I could brainstorm, but I would at least need better parameters. On Sat, Feb 17, 2018 at 11:26 PM, Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Hi, How about John Dilks? For those not familiar, John organized PC76 in Atlantic City, which most people consider the 1st computer show in the country along with the Philadelphia shows in the years following. I know he was a panelist at VCF-E a number of years ago but as a panel member he had a small amount of time to convey his experiences with other pioneers in organizing the shows. Last time I had contact with John about 3 or 4 years ago, he was still in NJ. Regards, Jeff

The problem is that many of them are dead. I was thinking about anyone related to the creation of the integrated circuit. Or anyone that worked for Texas Instruments. We have had Apple, Commodore guys. I don't recall any TI guys, anyone from TRS? Atari? The problem is that the *big* names are far or too much of a celebrity for such a event as ours. For next year is there anyone that was at the founding of ARPANET? How about Greg Whitten? He made GW-BASIC ;) Do you have a list of speakers from the past, so that we don't suggest someone who has already spoken? I just want to say that I don't think we should consider anyone as too big of a celebrity. If we could get so lucky, someone famous would give the event a huge boost. Nothing wrong with aiming high. I would love to see a VCF East with over 1,000 visitors! In that case: Bill Gates, Steve Wozniak, Nolan Bushnell, Paul Allen, Guy Kawasaki, but they are on the left coast, so they don't qualify ;)

Bill Gates
I've (seriously) tried reaching him a few times via his foundation (Microsoft refers all queries to them). Never got a response.
Steve Wozniak
He spoke two or three times at VCF West in the pre-VCFed days. It's getting harder to book him post-Jobs, but rest assured, your fellow board members and I know do have occasional contact with him. :)
Nolan Bushnell
Possibly. He was recently in some controversy about sexual harassment though .... we wouldn't want to bring that attention to the organization (his actions are certainly not something to be discussed in any detail on this list, however.)
Paul Allen
We tried, as you know. :) Last time he gave a public speech was several years ago when he donated zillions to a university. LCM director told us to keep our expectations low for ever getting him to speak, however, he IS known to show up to such events just as an attendee! :)
Guy Kawasaki
Cool idea. Maybe for VCF West.

He would certainly be entertaining!
People like that usually work through speaker bureaus and charge $$$ but I will look into it.
While it would be best to have an actual person who was a pioneer in computing related to this forum, they are becoming few and far between. If it's hard to find a keynote speaker now... imagine the future years. I would be partial to the idea of a possible bridge between the "now and then" as a keynote speaker. "Now" being people who are alive and "Then" meaning those who passed away. Such a person could be in the form of a computer historian. After all, wasn't Jason Scott a keynote speaker a few years back? I would nominate David Greelish for example. He has been active as a computer historian, and has done extensive research and published articles for people like Stan Veit. Stan can't tell his story anymore, which is an interesting one at that, but people like David can abstract the history of many major players in early computing and present that information to the newer generations that (I hope) will be attending in future years. Hiya Evan, I have a suggestion, also probably better for VCF-SE, as the guy lives in Florida. His name is Gary Webb, he was one of the original designers of the PCJr system. (He also has the prototype SN#1 of the PCJr motherboard, as well as the engineering-sized schematics for the PCJr.). After IBM, I believe he worked for Hayes (or maybe USR?). He told me some great stories about when the team of engineers were working on the Jr. I think he would be a good speaker, as well as displaying his artifacts. I’ll email you off list with his contact information. On Tue, Feb 20, 2018 at 11:18 AM Dean Notarnicola via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> wrote:

Kind of tongue and cheek... Is John Esak (Scripsit) still alive? How about Howard Wolowitz? Developer of ProFile for the TRS-80 and later filePro and Big Bang name sake (one of the show writers used to work for him). ________________________________ From: vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic-bounces@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> on behalf of Evan Koblentz via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vintagecomputerfederation.org> Sent: Friday, February 23, 2018 12:50 PM To: vcf-midatlantic Cc: Evan Koblentz Subject: Re: [vcf-midatlantic] Help! We need a VCF East keynote speaker
What about bringing back old speakers from like 10 years ago that were good? Some people never saw them, some would like to see them again. There's no reason not to bring back speakers after a long period of time.

Three months until VCF East. I need to find a keynote speaker for Saturday, May 20. Right now I don't really have any good leads.
Looking for realistic suggestions: people who did something important and live reasonably close.
** Nobody should contact any potential speakers on our behalf. Needs to go through me.
