Total Solar Eclipse and VCF East 2024
It has been brought to my attention that there may be a significant number of people that will be traveling to see the total solar eclipse which takes place on April 8 and some will be skipping VCF East. VCF East is scheduled for April 5, 6, 7, 2024 @ InfoAge. The total solar eclipse in the US is a rare event and the next one is in 2044. I already saw the last one in 2018 in Smithville, TN, so I don't need to see another. It was quite an interesting experience. I'd be curious to know what all of you feel about whether you would attend or not based on this information. It's not too late to change the dates, but I would need to figure it out within the next few weeks. Please let me know either in this thread or private mail about your attendance of VCF East or the solar eclipse. Thanks!
A solar eclipse is cool I guess, but it's not something I'm going to reschedule over. I don't know about other folks here, but VCF East has become one of the things that I look forward to the most all year round. At this point, much of my vacation time is used to attend VCFs, and I see no reason to change that at this time. Many years ago, I made the choice to do something else instead of go VCFE, and I still think I made the wrong choice. Come April, you'll see me in New Jersey. I would not be changing my plans for VCF East based on the eclipse. My April schedule is already filling up, and I'm having to schedule around VCF. Mike Loewen mloewen@cpumagic.scol.pa.us Old Technology http://q7.neurotica.com/Oldtech/
I have a telescope as well as filters on order for the eclipse next year, so you can likely guess my answer. "Make no small plans. I am planning to make the trip from Arizona for the scheduled event and the solar eclipse will not be a factor in that. Regards, Jeff Galinat On Thu, Nov 9, 2023 at 5:10 PM Jeffrey Brace via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

The line of totality runs a few miles from my house. I've been waiting for decades for it!

I saw the one in 2018 in KY. It was a fantastic experience and made the next one all that more desirable to see.

I was planning on doing both, since I have to go home on Sunday anyway. The eclipse is Monday afternoon, which should give me enough time to get wherever I need to get to. I didn't have plans to go any farther than 3-4 hrs from home on Monday in any case. -ethan
We are going to do eclipse so won't be exhibiting at east. Will see about doing one of the other VCF events instead this year. On Thu, Nov 09, 2023 at 07:10:34PM -0500, Jeffrey Brace via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

The solar eclipse is cool, but I would not travel to see it. I still think that the end of April is better for VCF East. The end of April has much better chance for warmer or milder weather. A freak early April snow would keep more people away than an eclipse. On Fri, Nov 10, 2023 at 9:10 AM Kelly Leavitt via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Davit Lovett from Usagi Electric told me that he will be in Texas that weekend and would skip VCF unless it were on a different date. He feels that the ticket-purchasing general public would be less motivated to go to an annual event rather than a once-in-a-lifetime cosmic event. David used the phrase "event suicide" and fears that VCF-East would take a huge hit on attendance. I know that the audience on this mailing list is highly committed to VCF and has different priorities. I just think we should not take this lightly for the sake of the success of the festival. I’ll respectfully disagree with the person who suggested event suicide by scheduling VCF when there is an eclipse. Eclipse is cool, seen several totals and countless partials in my life (fortunate timing for my location and the subsequent eclipse a couple times) On the eastern seaboard and adjacent states the eclipse is on Monday afternoon with partial not starting till around 2pm from Ohio East and totality around 3pm-ish. Vcf East is over Sunday afternoon. The economy and other factors will potentially have a larger impact on any event than the solar eclipse will. Just my .02 Tony Bogan Sent from my iPhone

Please let me know either in this thread or private mail about your attendance of VCF East or the solar eclipse.
Thanks!
I plan to go see the eclipse, and would be forced to skip VCF East. IMO, we should reschedule. - Alex

Hmm, bad timing. I will be in Vermont for the eclipse. First VCF I've missed in a bit.

Yes, you do not look directly at an eclipse, but you can look directly at all of the stuff at VCF East. Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.
