a home for unloved modern computers & parts
A friend from the NJ Linux group helps with TDI Connect (formerly the Trenton Digital Initiative (TDI)) http://tdiconnect.org/TDIConnect_PCDonations.php They refurbish computers and supply them to schools and those in need. They really need: USB mice, USB keyboards, monitors, etc. I'll gladly collect any such "leftovers" from the the Swap Meet and forward them (unless Ian Finlay can be there to collect directly). I don't want him to make the trip only to return empty-handed. -- jeff jonas
You know the CDL (Computer Destruction Lab) does this exact same thing, and they are a sibling organization at InfoAge. I would consider donations to CDL first and then an org like TDI. CDL generously allows use of it's facilities at InfoAge for VCF repair workshops and the use of their broadcasting/streaming studio for our Live events... -andy

I didn't know school systems would accept outside computers? I have friends that work in IT in public schools and TBH they're pretty much rolling in money. They have storeis of days where they have to spend like $300,000 by the end of the day. It sounds like it's not managed very well, but money doesn't seem to be an issue when it comes to hardware. Plus if you are supporting an org, having standard configurations for automated deployment and stuff is a big deal. Now if you could get the computers in the hands of the young children that are from lower income/troubled families, that seems like it would be cool. No idea if the parents would allow it to stay or pawn it but it might open the door for kids to mess around and get curious about computers. Self teach skills, etc. - Ethan

No they don't. 1) check their web site http://compdecon.org/need/ 2) Here's a very trimmed/edited reply from the mailing list: We are a maker space. We are NOT a computer/electronic recycling service … When we take donations, the goal is to use the equipment in our Lab as we expand services … Each time someone drops off their old stuff without talking to one of the board members, it creates work for mostly Dan who then has to take it to Wall Township recycling. -- jeff jonas
