If we want to be picky (and we always do), I'd say winter *peaks* on the solstice, since it's the darkest day of the year. I'd argue it's well underway by the official calendar start date. - Dave
I just pointed out Dec 21 for fun ;-). I prefer Festivus but whatever it's called it doesn't really matter as long as we get together. Sorry Dave McGuire. ... Mr. Riley - Back to picky though -- while sunlight is dimmest on the 21st, the actual effect on the ground and water temperature lags a bit behind. Lake temps are much higher in October than April. Random lake in Maine, Rangeley Lake: https://lakemonster.com/lake/ME/Rangeley%20Lake-water-temperature-1268 .. water temps drops until about Jan 4th when it's finally frozen, and stays frozen until late April. Same seems true for coastal water too: : https://www.weather.gov/gyx/water_temperature_normals.html .. even May has colder temps on average than May due to this lag effect. However Soil temps show some lag but not as much: Soil temps in Philadelphia for last year, (Source: https://www.greencastonline.com/tools/soil-temperature ) Coldest period is Mid-November through first week of March. indicating a lag of ~ 3 weeks from 12/21. That said I play the most video games around 12/21 because there's no light outside.. On Mon, Jul 25, 2022 at 5:05 PM David Riley via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

The word "Festivus" was voted out of the by-laws, and a generic name was put in just for the documents sake, but again like Chris said, it can publicly be called whatever. The by-laws aren't saying that it must be CALLED the generic name. It is simply identfying that winter event party, under a set of responsiblities of a new "position" called Event Coordinator. We did, I recall, all agree we were ready to let "festivus" go as an operating name of that party. Probably for varying reasons- tired of it, immature, ready for a fresh departure from old days. We simply failed at that point to come up with a good new way to refer to it publicly. We were tired. On 7/25/2022 1:45 PM, Dave McGuire via vcf-midatlantic wrote:

If it's the "The Annual Winter Volunteer Celebration" then it is the "The Annual Winter Volunteer Celebration". If you want to get technical it's really the "End of Year Gathering", but your mileage may vary I work at a place that is a lot more jacked up about this season. I really don't want it here. I'm more concerned what is going happen at the event then the name I'm going to bring a Tron DVD and like last year I will go get chicken wings from CluckU. Everyone seemed to like the wings so I will get more. https://cluckuwall.com/ Hopefully Ian will bring video games Computers will be fixed, traded or sold Burgers and hot dogs will be dispensed The sounds of model trains will be heard in the distance We will freeze like we do every year And everyone will have a good time. OK. The plan is no repair workshop like last year. It fragmented the group and it's meant to be a party more than anything else. We would rather have everyone in one building. We will still allow a mini-swap meet. VCF won't be setting up a table for that. I spent too much time selling swag by myself most of the party instead of enjoying the party.
I'm going to bring a Tron DVD and like last year I will go get chicken
Yes. We can setup something maybe with a projector in a room. Or just in the main party room (cafeteria). Whatever will work best.
wings from CluckU. Everyone seemed to like the wings so I will get more.
Yes. Everyone seems to enjoy chicken wings. Very welcome!
Hopefully Ian will bring video games
I will ask him to bring some games as he always does. Anyone else is allow to bring, but should let me know so that I'm sure that there is enough room in the "game room".
Computers will be fixed, traded or sold
Traded, sold, yes. No repair workshop this time.
Burgers and hot dogs will be dispensed
Yes. We plan on grilling in the outside trailer like last year. I hope that Bernie S comes and helps me with that. It was nice to have cooking partner.
The sounds of model trains will be heard in the distance
Yes. InfoAge will have the holiday train show as always!
We will freeze like we do every year
I don't control the weather!
And everyone will have a good time.
I will enforce this. Everyone *will* have a good time or else ;)
All I ask is let me know when we need to send money
This year we won't use EventBrite. No one seemed interested in using it. We will take cash or credit card at the door. Those who want to pay ahead can do so with PayPal.

I did enjoy offloading some stuff last year (and judging by the amount I offloaded, so did many others!). I'm hoping to bring some this time as well, assuming we're not in the middle of a big COVID wave. I personally wouldn't likely be going to a workshop.
