I got an email overnight from HSC, at one time known as Halted Electronics, about their going out of business. They were the classic electronics surplus stores with bins full of dusty components and strange secrets sitting on top of each other. The last time I was in Silicon Valley, I stopped there and grabbed some S-100 prototyping boards (they had dozens of them), and looked through their collection of other S-100 boards. They had a fair amount of other vintage computing stuff too. The web page can’t possibly show everything they have, but it’s worth a look: https://www.halted.com/commerce/index.jsp I have no involvement with them except as a customer. Always great people to work with. Bob
I was just there last week and bought a bunch of parts for a project. Last month I bought from them a NOS high voltage probe for discharging monitors, it was on clearance 50%off. Unless something changed they are on a month to month lease and are looking to sell the business, though they are doing a blowout clearance sale just in case they can’t find a buyer. corey cohen uǝɥoɔ ʎǝɹoɔ Sent from my iPhone

That's a real shame. When I lived in Petaluma in the early 2000's I used to visit the Rohnert Park HSC weekly along with Weird Stuff Warehouse in the south bay. Moving back to the east coast made it really obvious how special those places were. There's nothing like either store here in the DC area, much to my disappointment. There's a place called (I think) Interstate Electronic about 20-30 minutes north of the museum. I've never been there. On Fri, Nov 30, 2018, 12:25 PM Chris Fala via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org wrote:

IEI electronics on 36 in airport plaza in Hazlet is very much around but their electronics parts stuff is thinning out and they are concentrating more on the car stereo and home theater business. In the Bay Area, Anchor Electronics seems to be going strong. I was in there on Tuesday and it was really busy, but they mostly cater to new electronic stuff they do have some NOS Atari items and various connectors. I also checked out Fry’s just to see if they had anything left and yep they aren’t cheap but they also carry a lot of new parts but things you might need to fix a TV or monitor like though the hole caps. I bought a $3 cleaning rod for my Hakko desoldering gun there. Cheers, Corey corey cohen uǝɥoɔ ʎǝɹoɔ Sent from my iPhone

All the Silicon Valley geek stores going out of business, price out of the market due to real estate speculation. All the nerd surplus is in shenzhen now.

:-( I was in San Mateo a couple of months ago for business and didn't have any excursion time in my schedule, but it would have been nice to have been able to have hit them when I was out there. I don't have any upcoming travel to that part of the world, so I'll probably miss out. The S-100 stuff is of some interest to me (I have a XOR and a Godbout/Compupro box). It's been 20 years since my last visit to Weird Stuff Warehouse. It was a blast browsing at all those places and, well, that era is basically behind us. -ethan They were the classic electronics surplus stores with bins full of dusty components and strange secrets sitting on top of each other. If we could talk goodwill into opening a science store here and there with all the strange stuff they send to Dell for recycling... - Ethan
Like the goodwill idea. Or maybe a new nonprofit that serves such a purpose? Perhaps some people in this group could get the ball rolling (and hand off). On Nov 30, 2018, 10:50 AM -0500, Ethan O'Toole via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org>, wrote:
