VCF museum machines in need of TLC
Jeff Salzman will be working making a backup boot disk for the Zorba. One of them stopped working. He will also take a look at the H89. We also need good demos to run on the Amiga 1000. Some of the disks don't seem to work *and* apparently some disks have the SCA virus. Could someone bring a disinfectant? The museum also has an SD card reader for the Vic-20. I just haven’t had time to set it up yet. Maybe someone can help me figure it out and pick some good demos. Also the museum 1541 drive on the C64, has issues. I had swapped it out for another one, but haven't had the chance to try simple troubleshooting like a disk cleaner, etc. It has JiffyDOS and is cosmetically better than the one I swapped. Maybe someone can take a look at it. Jason Perkins will look at the Lisa as it doesn't boot now. I would like a better demo for the Atari 1040ST. If anyone has a better suggestion for a disk, please let me know. Also need someone to install the SD card read for the IBM PCjr. The Apple 2 seems to be having issues again. It might just need a card to be reseated. Does anyone have experience getting the TRS-80 working with a floppy drive? I'd like to get some demos working on that machine. I think that's all. ========================================= Jeff Brace Vice President & Board Member Vintage Computer Festival East Show-runner Vintage Computer Federation is a 501c3 charity http://www.vcfed.org/ jeffrey@vcfed.org
Hello! Jeff did you call for the Doctor? Because I'll be there on the Saturday. I speak Apple 2 speak and can finagle enough strangeness for the PCjr to get along with it. So, that's part of the message to confirm the obvious regarding the Saturday. ----- Gregg C Levine gregg.drwho8@gmail.com "This signature fought the Time Wars, time and again." And while watching Perry Mason destroy a witness regarding what the person saw or did not see, he's taking notes. He's also taking notes on why the district attorney is making a bigger fool of himself than usual;. He notes that Della is also taking notes, and Della also has Duke asleep in her lap. The regular pair are sitting with him, and the rest of the team are asleep in the office. From the Doctor and Perry Mason an unpublished Memoir.

Some stuff, especially after 1986, requests FAST RAM, which will crash an unexpanded A1000. It was a problem back then too. The program might not need more than 512K total, but the programmer made a request specifically for FAST RAM when there was none, so you got a Guru Meditation. -ethan

There are some older demos that will run in 512K of RAM (with no FAST RAM), but a lot of the good stuff expects 512K of CHIP and 512K of expansion RAM (FAST or A500-type "half-FAST" RAM). If you look for things from 1985 or 1986, it should all run great on a plain A1000 (with just the front-bay CHIP RAM expansion which is standard). At 1MB of total RAM, there are many, many options. -ethan

I use a GOTEK with the Flash Floppy software with mine. There is some menu software you can load on the GoTek that lets you browse a collection of diskette images and then boot the ST from the floppy image. It is an old GoTek. Not sure if the menu software works with the new GoTek as they use a different chip. If you need a donation to buy one let me know. Dave G4UGM

We also need good demos to run on the Amiga 1000. Some of the disks don't seem to work *and* apparently some disks have the SCA virus. Could someone bring a disinfectant?
Wow! That takes me back to 1987! -ethan

Yes. I actually got excited when Dennis called to say that the computer had a virus! He didn’t know which one, but I guessed the right one. I was excited because it is a “historical” virus since it is the first known for the Amiga. I just don’t know how to trigger it again to take a picture.

Like a lot of (later) Amiga viruses, it triggers when it thinks it has spread enough. For the SCA Virus, it keeps a count in memory that it writes out with each new infection and when that hits 15 or so, the next reboot gives you the message. It _might_ be triggerable by (re)booting a write-protected infected floppy. Some would do that because the detection mechanism would fire when failing to infect a floppy because it was already infected and couldn't update the count. That might only be true for some of the later viruses, but it's quick to try. The long way is to intentionally stage an infection party with a stack of clean disks by reboot, swap, reboot cycles until you get the screen. https://www.vht-dk.dk/amiga/desc/txt/sca.htm -ethan
