Re: [vcf-midatlantic] VCF Flea Market
I’ll echo everyone else’s sentiments - it was good to see the few folks I knew there, but dang was it hot! We should rename it “Swap Melt”. In any case, I just finished updating my webpages with the sold items marked off, but there’s still plenty left! (theshusters.com/bobvintage.html) - *Please* feel free to make offers - I promise I won't be insulted. Nobody wants this TRS-80 Model 4? I was really hoping to not bring it home, but alas… Also the Wang WLTC is still available. Lots of people thought it was cool, but none interested enough to take it home! - Bob Shuster
Regarding the TRS 80 Model 4 (and III) ... I also noticed the lack of a market for the TRS 80 Model III and 4 at the Kennett Classic surplus sale. They used to be a lot more popular in vintage computing circles. Generally-speaking there is less of a market for monochrome displays as much. This is also true when you compare the IBM PC 5151 vs 5153 display. Bill On Tue, Jun 25, 2024 at 2:48 PM Bob Shuster via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

The real challenge with the model III and IV is they're bulky as heck. I am absolutely hoping to have one or both in my collection, but they take up a lot of space. And Bob, I absolutely love the WLTC but it's so niche and I've put a lot of money into other things I'm wrestling with justifying investing in another magnificent museum piece. :) On Tue, Jun 25, 2024 at 4:02 PM Bill Degnan via vcf-midatlantic < vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote:

Yes, This swap was definitely less lucrative for many sellers than our previous one, definitely an issue due to the heat. Interests seem to also be shifting in the community. Another thing to keep in mind is not pricing based off eBay. I didn’t personally run into anything overpriced, but I was also not there to shop I went to volunteer and sell. At swaps I always look for busted systems to fix and I did surprisingly see a lot of working systems. That may have to do with it too. Like many of us I’m a tinkerer and I just want to find some broken machines to get going. -Ian L. (not that many of you will be able to read this because of yahoo's weird .eml encapsulation on this listserv, but here goes anyway) That is the first time I was able to attend a VCFed swap meet, and minus the heat, I enjoyed myself. Sold some things, bought some things, gave some things away. And I avoided sunburn and dehydration for the most part. I came back with less weight in items but my wallet was lighter than when I started -- c'est la vie. I also forgot to grab my whiteboard markers out of my toolkit which was locked in the workshop space, which would have been nice for making my advertising signage. Thank you to whomever thought to provide sunscreen for sale at the VCFed merch table, I made use of that because I forgot to bring some. I don't know when my schedule will permit me to attend another one of these, but here's hoping it will be at a time that isn't so brutally hot. -Alexander 'Z' Pierson On Tuesday, June 25, 2024 at 08:06:13 PM EDT, Ian Litchfield via vcf-midatlantic <vcf-midatlantic@lists.vcfed.org> wrote: Yes, This swap was definitely less lucrative for many sellers than our previous one, definitely an issue due to the heat. Huh. I guess I hadn't seen a trend of that. I'm still fully into 70s micros and a lot of them were monochrome. I was about to go looking for my IBM 8503 mono PS/2 VGA monitor to use with the recently-published Raspberry Pi Pico Mac 128K emulator. I figure it will be a good combo (for a color VGA display, the Pico just ties the R, G, and B pins together, so it can drive a mono VGA monitor just as well. As for TRS-80 hardware not being as popular lately, I definitely have most of what I'd ever want that's Z-80 based (I even have at least one Model 1 and Model 4 in excess of needs), so I'd probably only consider adding an m68k model if anything. -ethan -ethan

Gotta get the next generation into the platform. A lot of older collectors probably already have Coco's and TRS-80s. Gave my Model 4 to friends years ago because I didn't have room (The one that blew up at HOPE in NYC, Glitch might remember that event.) Then I ended up with a Coco2 and a NIB 3. Haven't had much time to explore the platform, so many systems! - Ethan

One of my personal favorites is the model III. Never super valuable, not glamorous. Part of the TRS 80 model III, Vic 20, Apple II+ "trinity rev 2"
I think one thing everybody is forgetting here is that this particular swapmeet was not at its best due to the weather. (Heat) It was awfully hot, not a lot of people showed up to buy in the first place. For those people who are first time dealers or sellers, it must’ve been a bad experience. I expected to sell more of the cards that I had but I did not. Admittedly, I did not even walk around much at all due to the heat. Believe me, this is not the norm for this particular event, so do not judge by this one event alone. Mike Sent from: My extremely complicated, hand held electronic device.

Market saturation? Waiting for the killer app or YouTube love? FujiNet maybe? Note, I've heard in the book Ready Player One the Coco2 game Dungeons of Daggorath is mentioned. Modernish tie-in. Growing up I remember a neighbor playing some kind of Mickey game on the Coco2 and it was using a tape for real time audio. I remember thinking, man my Atari doesn't do it quite that well.... The case design of that mall-found computer isn't appealing but could this thing give my Atari 800XL a run for the money? I just tried to search and came across Mickey's Space Adventure: http://www.lcurtisboyle.com/nitros9/mickeysspaceadventure.html Which mentions disk drive so I don't think that was it. But interesting that Al Lowe wrote that. He did Black Cauldron, my best and favorite early Tandy 1000SX title. Feebay shows Math Adventures with Mickey and Mickey's Alpine Adventure. Looking at the manual pdf for the Math one that doesn't sound like it but who knows. Maybe I misremember the whole thing and that neighbor had a disk drive but I'm 99% sure it was tape and doing audio playback between loading screens during plot. Anyone know? - Ethan

Many of the CoCo love is directed at the CC3, since it has better graphics and more RAM. That probably limits the appeal in general. Don't come hating on me, just noting what's going on. I have plenty of CC1s and 2s here, as well as a Tano Dragon. But, the 6847 color options leave a bit to be desired. Jim
FujiNet for COCO is already here. Lots of people using them. The whole thing is a bit weird to me as Atari enthusiast- but whatever floats your boat. It's actually a cart and insta-loads the config, it's one of the cooler platforms for FujiNet. -andy
